This study was to examine the moderated mediating effects of assertiveness on victim empathy that was hypothesized to mediate the relationship between adolescents' moral identity and bullying defending behavior. We aimed to provide practical implications for the development education and group counseling programs to promote defending behavior in bullying situations. To this end, a survey was conducted with 716 elementary and middle school adolescents. Results were as follows. First, victim empathy partially mediated the relationship between adolescents' moral identity and defending behavior: moral identity directly affected defending behavior and indirectly affected defending behavior through victim empathy. Second, the relationship between victim empathy and defending behavior was different depending on the levels of assertiveness: the higher the level of assertiveness, the greater the effect of victim empathy on defending behavior. Third, assertiveness moderated victim empathy that mediated the relationship between adolescents' moral identity and defending behavior: the higher the level of assertiveness, the higher the influence was positive. Results suggest that in order to promote defending behavior in education and group counseling programs designed to prevent peer harassment, moral identity must be cultivated and strengthened to empathize with victims, and the focus should be on improving assertiveness, the ability to express one's rights, feelings, and thoughts.
