A single round of in vitro fertilization (IVF) costs between $12,000 and $30,000. A “round” refers to the process that doctors follow to create the embryos. In 2022, the global IVF industry was valued at $35 billion. On average, it costs more than $61,000 to achieve either a live birth or to determine that continued rounds are not likely to succeed. There are profound moral issues with the way IVF is practiced in the U.S.—in many cases, amounting to eugenics. Over 75 percent of fertility clinics offer preimplantation genetic testing for genetic issues; 73 percent offer testing for sex selection or hair, eye, and skin color. Children born through IVF have a higher likelihood of cancer, autism, minor cleft pallet, or a congenital heart defect.
