이 연구의 목적은 세대 간 사회이동에서 실제와 인식의 비관적 차이를 분석하는 것이다. 특히 이 연구는 기존 연구에서 분석하지 못한 국가의 불평등 수준과 세대 간 사회이동에 대한 비관적 인식의 관계에 초점을 두었다. 그 이유는 사회이동에 대한 비관적 인식이 증가함에 따라 사회적 갈등이 증가하고, 사회정책에 대한 개인의 수용성이 낮아질 수 있기 때문이다. 분석자료는 2009년 국제사회조사의 4차 불평등 모듈이고, 분석방법은 다수준 로지스틱 회귀분석 방법을 적용하였다. 분석결과는 첫째, 국가의 불평등 수준이 세대 간 사회이동에 대한 비관적 인식에 정적으로 유의미한 효과를 가짐을 확인했다. 즉, 사회가 불평등할수록 사람들이 세대 간 사회이동을 비관적으로 인식할 확률이 높았다. 둘째, 개인의 소득지위가 낮을수록 세대 간 사회이동을 비관적으로 인식할 확률이 높았다. 셋째, 젊은 세대일수록, 별거·이혼·사별 또는 독신(비혼)일수록, 고학력일수록 세대 간 사회이동을 비관적으로 인식할 확률이 높았다. 이러한 연구결과는 사회 전체의 불평등 수준을 낮추기 위한 사회정책적 개입이 세대 간 사회이동에 대한 비관적 인식을 개선하고 사회통합을 달성하는데 중요할 수 있음을 시사한다.
