초록보기

대학교육의 팽창은 고등교육의 수직적, 수평적 계층화를 초래하여 대학원의 역할을 변화시킨다. 대학교육의 팽창으로 대학진학에 끼치는 가족 배경의 영향력이 줄어들고 여성의 대학진학률이 높아졌다. 하지만 가족의 사회경제적 배경이 대학원 진학 확률에 영향을 끼치는지, 양자의 관계에서 성별 격차는 없는지에 대한 연구는 상대적으로 부족하다. 본 연구는 2010~2018년 대졸자직업경로이동조사를 이용하여 구체적인 출신 대학, 세부 학부 전공, 출신 고교의 유형 및 인구학적, 기술적 변수를 통제한 후 부모의 소득, 자산, 직업, 교육 4가지 차원의 사회경제적 계층이 대학 졸업 직후의 대학원 진학 확률에 끼치는 영향과 그 정도의 성별 격차를 측정하였다. 그 결과, 구체적인 대학과 세부 전공을 통제한 후에도 가족의 사회경제적 배경과 대학원 진학은 통계적으로 유의미한 상관관계가 있다. 부모의 소득과 학력 수준이 대학원 진학에 끼치는 상관의 정도가 성별로 상이하여 가족배경의 중요성은 남성보다 여성이 컸다. 상위계층에서는 대학원 진학의 성별 격차가 없었지만, 하위계층에서는 남성의 확률이 여성보다 높았다. 이러한 발견은 한 편으로는 ‘위대한 평등의 촉진자로서의 대학’ 가설의 한계를 노정하고, 다른 한 편으로는 성별 계층화의 새로운 차원을 드러낸다.
