2018년 6월, 제주도로 입국한 500여 명의 예멘 난민 수용 여부를 두고 한국사회는 찬반 양측의 첨예한 대립으로 인한 갈등을 경험했다. 이러한 갈등 속에서 언론의 뉴스 보도와 이를 재가공하는 포털 뉴스 환경 등이 예멘 난민에 대한 혐오적/배타적 담론을 확대재생산하는 것이 아니냐는 문제 제기가 확산되었다. 본 연구는 제주 예멘 난민 관련 담론 형성과 확산에 영향을 끼친 두 가지 요소라 할 수 있는 언론의 보도 방식과 온라인 댓글을 분석하여 한국사회에서 난민 관련 담론이 어떻게 확대 재생산되는지를 파악하고자 하였다. 분석 결과, 제주 예멘 난민에 대한 보도의 논조는 언론사의 정치성향에 따라 차이를 보이는 반면, 포털사이트의 베스트 댓글이 주도한 수용자 담론은 정치적 입장과는 무관하게 절대다수가 부정적/배타적 관점에서 형성되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이는 난민 이슈를 둘러싼 한국사회의 주류 공론장이 매우 배타적인 관점에서 형성되어 있음을 나타내는 방증으로 이해할 수 있다.
