본 연구는 2015년 미국에서 에볼라 유행병이 번지던 시기 소셜미디어에서 통용되던 에볼라 관련 허위정보에 개인의 취약성에 영향을 주는 예측 요인은 무엇인지에 대해 탐색해보았다. 본 연구에서 예측요인으로는 정보 목적의 인터넷 이용. 인지 욕구, 불안 조정 동기, 그리고 사회적 상호작용 동기를 포함했다. 온라인 설문조사를 통해 분석한 연구결과를 살펴보면, 정보 탐색을 목적으로 인터넷을 이용하는 사람들은 상대적으로 높은 인지 욕구를 보였으며, 인지 욕구가 높은 사람일수록 허위정보에 대한 취약성이 높은 것으로 나타나고 있다. 사회적 상호작용과 불안 조정 동기는 두 변인, 정보 목적의 인터넷 이용과 허위정보애 대한 취약성, 사이의 관계를 간접적으로 조정하는 것으로 분석되고 있다. 연구결과를 토대로 이론적, 실제적 함의 또한 제시하고 있다.
