본 연구는 한󰡈아세안 교환학생 프로그램에 참여한 한국 대학생들을 대상으로 하여 교환학생 프로그램 유형이 교육적 경험을 매개로 학생들의 세계시민성에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지 살펴보고, 이러한 변화가 왜, 어떻게 나타나게 되었는지를 순차적 설명 혼합 연구방법을 활용하여 심층적으로 분석하는 것을 목적으로 수행되었다. 설문조사를 통한 양적 연구결과, 체계적 지원을 제공하는 일반연수식 프로그램에 참여한 학생들의 세계시민성 성취 수준이 어학연수식 프로그램 참여 학생들의 성취 수준보다 높게 나타났다. 수업경험이나 대인관계와 같은 교육적 경험은 프로그램 유형에 따라 상이한 것으로 나타났으며, 결과적으로 교육적 경험은 프로그램 유형이 세계시민성 성취 수준에 미치는 영향을 매개하는 역할을 하고 있음을 확인하였다. 교환학생 프로그램 유형별 참여 학생들의 구체적 경험에 초점을 두고 후속된 질적 연구결과, 프로그램이 작동하는 외재적 조건(환경)이나 성격과 참여동기와 같은 학생의 개인적 특성에 따라 교환학생 프로그램 참여에 따른 교육적 경험과 세계시민성 성취 수준이 다른 양상으로 나타날 수 있다는 점을 발견하였다. 이러한 분석결과를 바탕으로 향후 교환학생 프로그램의 효과를 높이기 위해 고려해야 할 사항들을 시사점과 제언으로 제시하였다.
