초록보기

본 연구는 교사들의 디지털교과서에 대한 다양한 경험의 내용을 이해하기 위해 실시되었다. 탐색하고자 한 연구 문제는 "디지털교과서를 수용해 가는 교사의 경험 내용은 무엇인가?", "디지털교과서를 수용해 가는 교사 경험의 과정모형은 무엇인가?", "디지털교과서를 수용해 가는 교사 경험의 상황모형은 무엇인가?"로, Strauss와 Corbin(1998)이 제시한 근거이론방법을 사용하였다. 연구 참여자는 디지털교과서 수업을 해 본 경험이 있거나 현재 디지털교과서 수업을 담당하고 있는 초등학교 교사 4명과 디지털교과서 연구학교 운영에 몇 년째 관여하고 있는 학교장 1명을 대상으로 하였다. 본격적인 자료 수집은 2011년 2월부터 8월까지 진행되었으며, 연구 참여자와의 심층 면담 및 수업 관찰 등을 통해 이루어졌다.

확보된 자료는 개방 코딩, 축 코딩, 선택 코딩의 절차를 거쳐 분석되었다. 개방 코딩에서는 심층 면담에 의해 얻어진 근거자료를 토대로 최종 78개의 개념을 도출하였으며, 이 개념들을 추상화하여 25개의 하위 범주로 압축하였다. 하위 범주들의 개념적 밀도를 높여 추상화 하는 작업을 거쳐 10개의 범주를 발견하였다. 이 범주들은 인과적 조건(DT 수업을 맡게 됨, 변화 속에서 갈등 함), 중심 현상(힘에 부침), 맥락적 조건(믿을 수 없음, 혼자 해야 함), 중재적 조건(내적 동기를 유발함, 긍정적 기대감이 형성됨), 작용/상호작용 전략(상황을 재인식함, 좋은 수업의 본질을 인식함), 결과(부족한대로 순응함)로 분류되었다. 축 코딩 단계에서는 10개의 범주간의 관계를 인과적 조건, 맥락적 조건, 중재적 조건, 작용/상호작용 전략, 결과의 패러다임으로 정렬하여 교사들의 디지털교과서 사용 경험에 대한 패러다임 모형으로 제시하였으며, 각 범주의 속성과 차원을 제시하였다. 다음으로 선택코딩 단계에서는 이전의 분석 결과를 직관적으로 유추해봄으로써 교사들의 디지털교과서 사용 경험의 핵심범주로 '혁신의 고비 넘기'를 도출하였으며, 이를 중심으로 이야기 윤곽을 서술하였다.

교사들의 디지털교과서 사용 경험의 과정은 '혼돈 단계', '한계인식 단계', '불신 단계', '체념 단계', '상황 재인식 단계', '현실수용 단계', '순응 단계'로 변화하고 있음을 확인하였다. 또한 이러한 결과들을 요약하고 통합할 수 있는 상황모형은 개인 수준, 개인-학생 수준, 개인-디지털교과서 관련 기관 수준, 개인-조직 및 사회 수준에서 제시하였다. 마지막으로, 디지털교과서에 대한 교사 경험의 과정모형 그리고 상황모형을 선행 연구와 비교 논의를 전개하고 시사점을 제시하였다.

교사들의 디지털교과서 사용 경험은 어떠한 준비도 없이 개학과 동시에 디지털교과서 수업을 맡게 되면서 변화 속에서 갈등하는 상황으로 시작되었다. 교사들은 수업을 계획한대로 진행할 수 없고, 수시로 발생되는 문제 상황들과 업무 가중으로 인해 정신적·체력적으로 한계에 직면하게 되었다. 더욱이 주변을 둘러봐도 믿을 수 있는 지원 체계는 갖춰져 있지 않고, 결국은 혼자서 해야 한다는 상황이 더 힘에 부치게 만들었다. 하지만 교사로서 책임과 의무를 다 해야 한다는, 그리고 주변의 기대에 부응하고 싶다는 내적 동기 유발과 디지털교과서에 대한 긍정적 기대감이 형성되면서 상황을 재인식하기, 좋은 수업의 본질을 인식하기 등의 상호작용을 통해, 힘에 부치지만 부족한대로 순응하며, 교육제제 혁신의 고비를 넘어가기 위한 노력을 기울이고 있었다. 이러한 내용을 바탕으로 교사들의 디지털교과서 사용 경험은 '혁신의 고비 넘기'의 과정임을 알 수 있었다.

본 연구는 디지털교과서에 대한 교사 경험을 시간적, 구조적인 측면에서 통합적으로 파악하여 관련된 개념들을 밝히고 현상을 이해함으로써, 디지털교과서 정책에 대한 새로운 시각과 포괄적인 정책 수립의 중요성을 재인식하도록 하는 데 기여할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. 또한 디지털교과서를 사용하는 교사들을 위해 '혁신의 고비 넘기'라는 과정 속에서 적합한 지원전략을 개발하는 기틀을 제공해줄 수 있을 것이다. 한편 핵심범주에 대하여 맥락적 조건을 형성하는 각 범주의 속성과 차원에 따라 제시된 가설적 관계진술은, 가설 검증을 통해 디지털교과서를 사용하는 교사들에 대한 이해의 폭을 확장시켜 나가는 데 기여할 수 있기를 기대한다.
