초록보기

This Paper focuses on the denotation of dictation that Theresa Hak Kyung Cha's DICTEE constructs and expands. The narrator of DICTEE, Diseuse, and DICTEE as a text resist against one definite identity or one definitive meaning. In other words, it is impossible to reduce DICTEE to a single classification or preoccupation, for it resists such determination. Contradictorily, however, it also has disciplinary or incorporative desire. Such an ambivalent mode that simultaneously engages and disturbs, deviates from a notion of ethnic or national identity presenting obstacles as well as opportunities for contemporary readers.

Diseuse tries two kinds of dictation in the way of exploring available self-referential identity. First dictation is about resistance and disturbance performed under the Symbolic. She aims to speak through it as a subaltern and immigrant woman. Second dictation is performed in the Imaginary to listen and write as a subject and author. She identifies herself as a surplus transplant and collects the traces of female subjects across East and West cultures erased and buried in the dominant patriarchal history. These female subjects are presented the disembodied yet multiple voices, borrowed citations, and captionless photos in the text with the same status of her. Constructing a female genealogy from mothers to daughters, she attempts to open new space for the surplus to transplant who read and correct, add and write DICTEE as a coauthor and coeditor.
