유럽 모더니즘 미술이 미국 땅에 등장하기 시작한 20세기 초부터 추상표현주의가 대두한 1940년대까지 미국 미술계는 수입된 사조와 본토 양식이 더불어 존속하는 복잡한 국면을 보였다. 이같은 상황 속에서 미국은 유럽 모더니즘을 수용하는 한편, 유럽과 구별되는 독자적인 예술정체성을 찾아 나선다. 이러한 배경을 바탕으로 본고는 미국 모더니즘 사진과 회화의 독자성에 대해 고찰해본다. 논문의 초반부는 유럽 모더니즘이 미국으로 유입되는 과정에 대해 살펴봄과 동시에 미국에서 자국적 모더니즘에 대한 자의식의 맹아가 싹트는 경위에 대해 알아본다. 다음으로는, 역사적으로 회화에 비해 열등한 예술로 평가되었던 사진이, 그리고 문학의 종속에서 벗어나지 못했던 회화가 알프레드 스티글리츠와 클레멘트 그린버그의 등장에 힘입어 본연의 독자성을 모색하게 됨과 아울러 그러한 성과들을 통하여 미국이 자국 미술의 신화를 일궈내는 걸음들을 살펴본다. 이같은 논의를 통해 본 논문은 첫째, 미국 사진과 회화의 독자성은 추상과 불가분의 관계를 맺고 있다는 점; 둘째, 미국 사진과 회화 모두가 추상을 구현하는데 있어 음악의 형식을 이상으로 삼았다는 점을 논증한다. 즉 미국 사진과 회화 모두가 매체의 한계적 요소를 긍정적 요소로 치환했다는 점과 다른 매체에서 빌려왔던 효과를 배제했다는 점을 차치하더라도 독자성을 모색하는 과정에서 양자 모두가 추상을 도입했다는 점과 나아가 추상성의 구현에 있어 양자 모두가 음악의 사례를 수용했다는 점들은 미국적 모더니즘 표현의 모색에서 공통으로 보여지는 현상이라는 점에 대해 논의를 펼친다.
The American circles of art, over the period from the outset of the 20th Century in which European modernist painting appeared in America in a full-fledged manner to the 1940s in which abstract expressionism came to the fore, presented complex tendencies in which imported trends and native modalities coexisted. In the middle of the confusion due to Imported paintings and mainland ones, surfacing to co-exist, it gives a glimpse of accommodating European modernism and ventures out to find its unique artistic identity that will eventually give it a differentiating character from the European one. Having its foundation on the above-mentioned background, this draft gives American Photography and Painting’s Unique identity, careful consideration. The first portion of the dissertation covers the inflow of European Modernism in America. After, how the historically considered inferior form of art, photography, in comparison to paintings and paintings that were unable to shake off the traces of cultural imposition, were animated by the appearance of Alfred Stieglitz & Clement Greenberg’s and find their uniqueness; along with other successes, it paves the path towards becoming a myth within stain arts. Discussion as such will be dealt throughout this paper, first, how abstractionism and indivisibility are intertwined in American photography and paintings’ unique identity. Second, prove how both the American photography and paintings, idealized the music form in abstract realizations. that is to say discuss that the fact remained common in the procedure to find the American expression of modernism that American photography and paintings adopted the abstraction in the way to seek the unique identity and thus utilized the cases of music in realizing it.
