Stories play an important in the expression of our lives. Helped by its characters, setting and plot, we can finally understand a story and we feel catharsis. However, it is also true that storytelling is actively used not only in literature but also in many other areas. A shining example of this would be the theme park industry.

Today, each consumer has his or her own individuality. In this context, theme parks are considered one of the essential facilities that meet their demands. Many factors contribute to the success of those parks: location, investment scale, space use, theme choice, tourist attraction, etc. Nonetheless, the most important factor would be a high-quality content inspired by a certain theme and a story related to it.

Let' s take a look at some successful theme parks of the world. Walking through one of these parks, we actually feel like one of the characters of stories, because the parks clearly show us each scene of famous stories such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Pinocchio and the Little Mermaid. Influenced by American theme parks, France, Canada, Japan, Korea and China area l so using western fairy tales for their parks.

Nevertheless, I believe that Asian stories will also attract international tourists. For example, mythical stories in which characters worshipping a divine spirit defeat enemies and fight for justice. China, proud of its 5,000- year history, is famous for its mythical stories and Hsi-yu Chi is clearly the most popular around the world.

Hsi-yu Chi , a vivid mythical story, is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. In this novel, Xuánzàng, a well- known Buddhist monk of Tang Dynasty, sets out to India with his disciples Sun Wùkong, Zhu Bajiè and Sha Wùjing to retrieve the Buddhist scriptures for China. During their 19- year journey, they overcome 81 dangers and calamities. This thesis is about a theme park inspired by this famous Chinese story. Hsi-yu Chi is a classical novel but it is still popular today. Various contents have been created from this work all over the world: movies, TV series, games, animation movies, theme parks, tourist resorts, etc. Since the novel is full of beautiful colors and things to talk about, it is perfect material for developing a theme park.

The objective of this thesis is to analyze Hsi-yu Chi and at the same time, to design the Hsi-yu Chi Theme Park, focusing on the principle of theme park story- telling. In addition, the thesis will try to benchmark successful international theme parks and to find out China' s own merits, in order to design a new Chinese park. By doing so, China' s high- quality material will contribute to developing various contents.

This thesis is based on the basic concept and theory of story- telling. Moreover, it will analyze various similar contents and find out the merits of Hsi-yu Chi . It will also take into consideration the use of new technologies. In this way, the research will be able to be directly applied to the industry.

The thesis will first of all try to benchmark international theme parks in order to design the Hsi- yu Chi Theme Park. To do so, it will analyze Disnelyland and Universal Studios in California using the theory of storytelling. After that, it will also analyze the story of Hsi-yu Chi to find out China' so wn merits.

The thesis consists of the following parts.

First, before starting to design the Hsi-yu Chi Theme Park, it will offer some theoretical studies: what is theme park? What is the principal of story- telling? The Chinese theme park will be designed based on these theories.

Second, it will analyze the attractions of Dineyland and Universal Studios using the technique of theme park story- telling. By doing so, it will try to find out elements that make tourists revisit these parks, to consider them when designing the Hsi-yu Chi Theme Park.

Third, the thesis will also take a look at theme parks in China: their history, their current situation, their problemsa nd their futurep erspective.

Fourth, it will describe the Hsi-yu Chi Theme Park located in ZhengZheng country, HeBei province: its theme, space use, story- telling, etc, in order to find out its problems. For this, I visited the park to take photos and to talk with people working there.

Finally, based on the analyses described above, it will design the Hsi-yu Chi Theme Park. To do so, it will explain the context in which the novel has been chosen and then analyze its story. Especially, it will analyze highlighting scenes in the novel so that they can be used when designing the park afterward. This analysis will take into consideration game elements, animation elements and space use elements.

With all these analyses, this thesis will directly contribute to attraction engineers' design (3D and 4D). I did my best so that it can bed irectly used in the industry. Moreover, by analyzing the current Hsi-yu Chi Theme Park, I tried to find out its problems in order to design a new park with a new design theory. By doing so, I tried to develop an upgrade version of the Hsi-yu Chi Theme Park, clarifying why the park should exist and what is its value.

Furthermore, the thesis clearly explains the concept and characteristics of theme park story- telling, using all these analyses, theories and designs related to the theme park in question. By doing so, it underlines the importance of clear theme, story-telling and space use in harmony. So this thesis will contribute to creating a new concept theme park. Furthermore, it will also be used as a reference source when developing new content, using not only Hsi- yu Chi but also other high- quality material applicable to a theme park.
