초록보기

The area that humans can recognize and feel is very small. In humans' lives, many parts that build our lives come from the unconsciousness that we cannot recognize.

What stimulates humans' unconsciousness and bring it out is art. Artists express their own feelings on their artwork what they were stimulated variously from outside. I, as well, have expressed onto my artwork what I have experienced from my youth years till now.

Nature is what stays at the same place and what provides rests and stability. Since long time ago, artists have represented the nature onto their canvases, they found beauty through it, and they took their subjects for their art from it. I, as well, have found beauty from the nature which I was impressed, and started my research with wishing to share it with my audience.

This research aims to find further direction of my art by analyzing art as a semiotics, as unconsciousness, as a healing method, and by discussing about what artwork creations means to me.

First of all, signs consist of signifier and signified; if abstract concept is the signifier, the transporting method that transmits its meaning is the signified. If applying the concept of the symbol to an artwork, it can mean that an artist is producing a sign from their inner signifier onto a new artwork such as what are on canvases or in three dimensional forms, and such fact can be applied to my artwork production. My work is a new sign because I am containing the images onto my canvas what I have taken from the number of images of my unconsciousness.

Secondly, my degree application exhibition work is not about consciousness that tries to express something, but it rather started from something that is out of consciousness. That is why I looked in closely what kind of emotions are in my unconsciousness and how they have been expressed as an artwork.

My work in the past was based on my dreams. By documenting the images that I saw in my dreams, I turned them into an artwork; painting a dream or a vision is what expresses something in unconsciousness that is not known in the consciousness.

I have been living a life that is framed in my own limits of thoughts that I have made by myself. It can be explained under the concept of 'Mumyeong' in Buddhism. 'Mumyeong' in Buddhism is the fundamental concerns that creates sufferings.

Analyzing inner mind is the part that can help much for my further artwork developments, and as I can look into my inner mind more directly, I should be able to find the world of unconsciousness, and I can develop my artwork.

Lastly, as studying about art and healing, I have looked into what artwork creation means to me, and I have compared and analyzed with other artists who have worked on their artwork as a healing method. Healing means 'getting cures and getting illness be cured' which means not only about physical illnesses but also mental illnesses. Among the various areas of healings, the healing that I am talking about is about emotional healings, the inner mind healing. I am taking Yayoi Kusama, Frida Kahlo, Edvard Munch as examples. Their individual experiences and pains differences are clearly different to each other, but it is the same that art is one of the tools that brought out their inner minds.

Lastly, I have explained about my artwork from form and color aspects. The backgrounds created from form aspects enliven the artwork; for natural look of my artwork, I have used coincidental effects; for backgrounds, finalizing, and compositions and form aspects, I have used repetitions and overlaps. Actions of repetitions give rhythmical sense that let me focus solely onto its actions so that I would not be interrupted by other thoughts.

Colors are what express and create emotions, feelings and minds which individuals receive differently based on traditions, nationalities, and times of eras. I have limited the use of colors with red, yellow, blue, and green, and I have thought about what the colors meant to me.

For me, red, yellow, blue, and green symbolize each seasons. Red is either spring or fall; it is strong, active and passionate. Yellow is either spring or fall also; it is active liveliness and it is filled fully with joy and energy. Yellow has been used for expressions of living spring and joyful positive thoughts. Blue is either winter or night; it is not about gloominess or frustration but about peacefulness and calmness and mysteriousness. Green is spring and summer; it means tense and relaxation. For me, spring and summer are harmonious and productive seasons, and they mean that I would like to provide balance of body and mind, stability in body and mind, and rest to my audience.

The unconsciousness or inner mind world of humans is limitless, and individuals' various experiences that are floating in their unconsciousness get expressed onto the outer world through art. That is why artists should stimulate their audience's unconsciousness and refresh their audiences' emotions through the artists' artwork. My work is a sign or symbol, a tool that expresses inner mind world or and that cures inner minds. Through this research, I will try to find more free compositions and expressions; and through various tests and formal studies, I will try to build my own art world.
