This study was designed to present the life and the thought of tea culture of Choi Beom-Sul, who had Hyodang for his pen name and was called one of the best tea researchers since the 20th century.
Hyodang was both a monk and a tea researcher and even an independence activist, a politician and an educator. It is very sorry that he has not been studied in light of Hyodang's achievements. The study concentrated on his book, "Korean Tea Culture" and Hoiju Wonhwa Chae Jeong-Bok's "Hyodang Choi Beom-Sul".
Hyodang went through his school life during the Japanese colonial period and left home and went to Gonyang Dasolsa with his parents' permission. He had a turbulent life until he passed away in Jan. 10, 1979.
He never forgot his duty as a monk, respected Manhae Han Yong-Woon as a mentor, was deeply involved in the independence movement as an activist and faced Korea's crisis.
He experienced things Western during his study in Japan and showed much interest and affection in Korean cultures.
He also tried to restore Wonhyogyo Theory and left many achievements in the Korean tea culture.
First, He wrote "Korean Tea Culture", the first book to introduce tea culture. Since then, many junior scholars summarized concept for tea on the basis of the book and Choeui, who is called the most important monk for Korean tea culture, appeared.
Second, 'Banyaro' tea was made by the 'refined and increased tea' method.
Since Hyodang passed away, 'Banyaro' tea has been handed down by Chae Jeong-Bok, the president of Banyaro Tea Culture Institute, who studied Hyodang's tea mind and how to make tea.
Third, he initiated 'Korean Tea Culture Association', the first association of like-minded persons in Korea and had a great impact on Korea's modern tea culture history. He also made a comment on social restoration through Chadoyongsim and Chadomumun. It was an evidence for his tea mind to quote Hyodang's "frugal living of a person who enjoys tea is made by executing and using Daebiwon based upon Beophiseonyeol."
