By exploring the characteristics of diplomatic text in which a spokesman answers reporter's questions at a Regular Press Conference of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, this study is aimed at parallelizing the actual translation work and studying the translation strategy of diplomatic text.

These days, communication between countries become frequent, In particular, issues related to the U.S. China, North Korea and South Korea are reported many times. And political and diplomatic relations between countries can have a huge impact on military, economic, social and cultural aspects. And it has also given much difficulty to translators as it is affected by many stuffs, such as cultural, social, historical factors and ideology. For this reason, considering the characteristics of diplomatic text, this study translated the Regular Press Conference into Korean based on the theory of functionalism and discuss the translation strategy.

Considering the accuracy and political characteristics of source text, this study selected text registered on the official site of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China as source text. There were 225 regular conferences have been registered on the official site in 2018. Among them, five topics were selected based on functionalist theories.

Next, we looked at what strategies were used in the target text and what effects have been obtained through case analysis. First of all, we discussed major political policies and how to deal with vocabulary with value inclinations. In addition, spokesmen often euphemistically represent sensitive questions from reporters by using cultural factors such as poetry, idioms and metaphors. Translation resulting from these cultural factors were conducted by case analysis to discuss translation strategies. The translation strategy were derived by taking into account the last linguistic difference. Mainly derived from sentence cohesion, transformation of sentence structure and omission and addition of sentence components. Diplomatic languages continue to change over time, but they also have a certain language system. Diplomatic language has a characteristic that must be clear and concise, so when translating, it should be as faithful as possible to the content of the source text and conform to the language habits and expressions of the target test.

Through this study, we hope to produce more accurate translation techniques when translating official announcements such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In terms of discourse, it is hoped that translation will actively intervene in communication and understand and express nonverbal elements.
