The purpose of this study is to closely examine licensed musical as a multimodal text. This study ultimately aims to present guidelines for translating musical texts into Korean. Specific core research questions are as follows. 1) What are the characteristics of musical as a multimodal text? 2) How does musical create meaning as a multimodal text? 3) What guidelines for musical translation are proposed?

In order to answer the research questions and achieve the research objective, this study proceeds in three stages. The first is literature review. In this stage, musical modes are classified, and considerations for musical translation are presented based on the multimodality approach. Musical modes include song, dialogue, music, choreography, and stage setting, and these modes form a 'mode ensemble' and interact with each other.

The second stage is text analysis. In order to analyze how the musical modes specifically interact and create meaning, the script, music, sheet music, and video of the original musical (ST) and the licensed musical (TT) are compared. As a result, the song mode, dialogue mode, music mode, choreography mode, and stage setting mode form an ensemble with various combinations to create a musical message (meaning). Through this text analysis, the considerations for musical translation presented in the first stage are further specified.

In the final stage, interviews with musical translators are conducted. Through interviews with translation practitioners, information is obtained in more detail that were not available in the text analysis process. The interview analysis shows that translators recognize that musical has various modes, and as such, translate the musical text in relation to the mode ensemble. Based on the results, the guidelines for the translation of licensed musicals as a multimodal text is completed.

This study has three significances as follows. First, the perspective on the 'text' has been expanded by studying the non-verbal mode, which has been insufficiently studied in Translation Studies. Figures and the guidelines showing the interaction of mode ensemble presented in this study can be an investigation instrument for non-verbal mode analysis. Second, this study suggests the need for Translation Studies in Multimodality Studies. This study emphasizes the need for a translational approach to multimodality research by developing an instrument that can analyze multimodal texts by applying theories of Translation Studies. Third, this study shows that interdisciplinary research in the field of Performance & Art and Translation Studies is meaningful. The guidelines derived through text analysis applying the concept of multimodality and translation theory, and interviews with musical translation practitioners are meaningful as educational materials for Translation Studies, but can also be used academically or practically in the field of Performance & Art.
