ABSTRACT 74

초록보기

Reading has healing power. Books can help people feel heard and find a way to solve their issues. Having noted the healing power found in reading, I started a blog called "Lovetherapy" where I would post comforting articles on a regular basis. As of 2022, about 2.1 million people visited my blog, and I received a number of positive feedbacks from people saying they found consolation through the articles. This experience led me to study the possibility of bibliotherapy through a blog to show that an online space can still offer a therapeutic impact and function similarly as counseling.

This study consists of a literature review on bibliotherapy and a case study based on the records from my blog. The first part deals with the theoretical framework of bibliotherapy. Bibliotherapy, which means that you receive help and treatment by reading books, is based on various psychological theories such as psychoanalytic theory, gestalt theory, social learning theory, nondirective counseling theory, and rational emotive behavior therapy theory. There is an inevitable process for an effective bibliotherapy, such as principles including a reading behavioral perspective, a psychoanalytic perspective (identification, catharsis, and insight), and a narrative perspective. There are three views as to the purpose and value of bibliotherapy: it improves self-understanding, facilitates interpersonal relationships, and suggests solutions to practical problems. The process of bibliotherapy was investigated through the four-step model (recognition, examination, juxtaposition, and application to Self) proposed by Hynes & Hynes-Berry.

Bibliotherapy through blogs, an important discussion in this study, can be summarized as follows: 1) identification, 2) emotional catharsis, 3) insight, 4) self-reflection, and 5) change of the attitude towards life. I then suggest the possibility of a new way of bibliotherapy through blogs. First, you can experience the four-step process of Hynes & Hynes-Berry. Second, there is a process of bibliotherapy through posting. This corresponds to healing for the 'administrator' and has elements of writing therapy. Third, it is the process of organizing and expressing one's thoughts while writing comments in reply to posts or in guestbooks. This is a healing process for the 'visitors' and has elements of narrative therapy. Finally, blogging can open up a two-way communication between the administrator and the visitor.

How can bibliotherapy through blogging be applied to the Christian counseling context? First, we can think of bibliotherapy using Christian books. Christian books help focus on God and in so doing prevent possible life issues. Second, blogs provide a space for bibliotherapy through the Bible. The Bible is a healing resource that contains various human thoughts, forms, and literary genres, and people can receive a healing message through the characters and their lives in the Bible. Third, it can provide practical help to clients who need or want Christian counseling.

In conclusion, running a blog with a therapeutic purpose can bring healing to people. A review of the theories of bibliotherapy suggest that a blog as a healing space is possible, and that the comments left by visitors prove the results of this study. I hope that blogs will become a new place of healing in the non-face-to-face era where it is difficult to even feel the warmth of people due to the viruses including Covid-19.
