Abstract 99

초록보기

Lee Jang-hee is considered a poet that had a unique sense of language differentiated from the trends of the literary circles in the 1920s when he was creative. One of the major trends was romanticism, which tended to express the subject's emotions directly in works. Lee's poems had sensualism whose full-blown discussions began only in the 1920s as well as this romantic trend.

Previous studies tended to have discussions inclined toward certain aspects as they understood that these characteristics of his poems were different rather than organic. Sensualism was especially understood as a concept that overcame romanticism in the 1920s, which accelerated this trend further. Senses were the achievements and methodologies of modern literature that overcame emotions.

This study set out to examine the characteristics of Lee's poems with a focus on this ambivalent aspect found in his works and demonstrate that these characteristics could be understood as a concept of fantasy. The study consulted discussions by Tzvetan Todorov, Rosemary Jackson, and Kathryn Hume to define fantasy and also discussions about fantasy poems by Lee Chang-min and Yun Ji-yeong to find a methodology to investigate fantasy in Lee's poems.

The study approached the characteristics of Lee's poems via fantasy because of unrealistic linguistic expressions in his works and the deficiency of reality at their bottom. The reasons behind the unrealistic language to express fantasy are connected to the desire to express something not found in reality. In other words, fantasy is the "expression of desire for the deficiency of reality," and it is presented in "unrealistic language."

Lee's poems depict the subject's longing for something beyond reality, in which sense his poems have romanticism. His poems also have sensualism in that unrealistic expressions are via objects with materiality. In Lee's poems, romanticism and sensualism are not different concepts with no connections between them, but his motives for creation and methods of expression. In this context, the study proposed fantasy as a concept encompassing both romanticism and fantasy in his poems.

Fantasy will thus be a concept to overcome the dichotomous nature of previous studies on the poet. Unlike the previous studies that understood the characteristics of his poems had different traits and failed to make an organic approach to the overall poetic world of the poet, the present study aims to demonstrate that the characteristics of his poems can be understood in a single context of fantasy. Fantasy can be a viewpoint to view the overall poetic world of the poet and a discussion to rethink the significance of his poems in the history of poetry.
