 세계적인 기후 변화의 영향으로 발생하는 이상 기후, 자연재해, 해수면 상승, 생태계 변화 등으로 인해 인류를 포함한 지구의 모든 동식물이 생존이 위협을 받고 있다. 기후 변화의 가장 큰 원인인 온실가스 배출의 대부분은 화석연료를 통한 에너지 생산이며, 생산되는 에너지 대부분은 높은 적용성과 전환성을 가진 전기 에너지이다. 전기 에너지는 산업이 고도화됨에 따라 수요가 폭발적으로 증가하고 있으며, 이에 대응하기 위해 온실가스를 배출하지 않는 친환경적인 발전 방법인 태양광, 풍력, 수력발전 같은 신재생에너지를 사용한 발전 방법이 주목받고 있다. 따라서 친환경 발전 방법인 신재생에너지를 사용한 발전량과 설비가 지속적으로 증가하고 있고, 발전 환경에 따라 불규칙적으로 생성된 에너지를 저장 및 공급할 수 있는 에너지 저장시설 역시 함께 증가하고 있다. 이러한 신재생에너지 시스템의 수요에 맞추어 에너지 발전과 저장을 위한 소자의 생산이 빠르게 늘어나고 있지만, 역설적으로 에너지 소자의 생산 과정 중 많은 양의 유독한 화학물질과 온실가스가 배출되어 기후 변화를 가속하고 있다. 그뿐만 아니라 수명이 다한 사용 후 폐 에너지 소자의 배출이 생산량에 비례하여 증가하고 있고, 이에 함유되어있는 플라스틱, 중금속 등의 물질이 토양, 바다, 공기를 오염시켜 또 다른 문제를 일으키고 있다.

이러한 문제의 해결 방법의 하나인 주변에서 쉽게 구할수 있는 석재, 목재, 나뭇잎, 가죽 같은 천연 재료에 레이저, 잉크젯, 롤투롤, 3D 프린팅 같은 친환경 고효율 공정을 사용하여 다양한 기능을 부여한 천연 소자(Natural Device)는 전기 전자, 에너지, 웨어러블 등의 다양한 분야에 목적에 맞는 기능과 함께 천연 재료가 갖는 고유의 특성인 높은 접근성, 무독성, 생분해성, 생체 적합성 등을 그대로 가지고 있으므로 탄소 배출 절감과 폐기물 문제의 해결을 위한 유망한 해법이다. 하지만, 천연 소자 중 에너지를 저장 또는 생산할 수 있는 천연 에너지 소자(Natural Energy Device)는 대부분이 유기물 기반의 재료로 구성되어 다양한 공정의 적용이 어렵기 때문에 다양한 재료의 적용에 제한을 가지므로 우수한 성능의 구현이 어렵다.

따라서 본 연구에서는 천연 소자 그 중 에너지를 생산 또는 저장할 수 있는 천연 에너지 소자를 우수한 기계적 특성과 외관을 가지는 천연 재료인 석재와 친환경 공정인 레이저 공정을 사용해서 제작하는 방법으로, 유기물 기반의 재료로부터 탈피할 수 있는 금속, 세라믹, 복합체 등 다양한 재료에 적용 가능한 공정을 개발하였다. 개발된 공정을 바탕으로 높은 표면적을 갖는 다공성 구조를 제작하여 천연 에너지 소자에 적용하는 접근으로 천연 에너지 소자의 개념을 확립하고, 최적화를 통해 고성능의 천연 에너지 소자인 에너지를 저장할 수 있는 천연 MSC 스톤(Natural Micro Supercapacitor Stone)과 에너지를 생산할 수 있는 천연 레인 스톤(Natural Rain Stone)을 개발하였다.

천연 에너지 저장 소자 그 중 슈퍼커패시터에 해당하는 천연 MSC 스톤은 천연 소재인 대리석 기판 위에 CuO 나노파티클(Nano Particle, NP)의 폭발적 환원 소결을 이용하는 Explosive Reduction Sintering(ERS) 공정을 사용하여 높은 표면적을 가지는 3D 다공성 Cu 구조를 제작한 후 우수한 용량, 출력 특성을 가지는 스펀지 형상의 Mn₃O₄, 산호 형상의 Fe₃O₄ 를 전착하고, LiClO₄-PVA 겔-폴리머 전해질을 사용함으로서 6.55 μWh/cm² 의 에너지 밀도와 1.2 mW/cm² 의 전력 밀도의 우수한 성능을 가지는 효율적으로 전기 에너지를 저장할 수 있는 천연 MSC 스톤의 제작을 완료하였다.

천연 에너지 소자 그 중 Triboelectric Nanogenerator(TENG)에 해당하는 천연 레인 스톤은 천연 소재인 대리석 기판 위에 Al 파티클의 소수성 군집화 중 발생하는 마랑고니 효과를 이용하는 Intermittent Photo Hydrodynamic Clustering(IPHC) 공정을 사용하여 높은 표면적을 가지는 다공성 Al 구조를 제작한 후 Polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) 유전체층과 Al 상부 전극을 적층함으로서 24.54 W/m² 의 우수한 전력 밀도를 가지는 빗방울의 수력 에너지를 수확할 수 있는 천연 레인 스톤의 제작을 완료하였다.

또한, 천연 에너지 시스템의 사용 후 폐기 혹은 수리가 필요한 천연 에너지 소자만을 적출한 후 가벼운 폴리싱을 통해서 활성층만을 제거하여 대리석 기판을 재사용할 수 있다. 이러한 접근 방법을 통해서 생산 비용의 절감뿐만 아니라 적은 양의 친환경 폐기물의 배출 그리고 사용 후 폐 에너지 소자의 친환경 처리 방안을 제시하였다.

최종적으로 천연 에너지 소자는 훌륭한 외관과 우수한 기계적 특성을 바탕으로 건축물, 보도블록, 조형물과 같이 기능 없이 낭비되고 있는 주변 요소에 단순히 부착시키는 방법으로 기존 신재생에너지 소자가 가지는 공간적 제약, 환경 파괴, 사고 위험으로부터 탈피함과 동시에 주변 환경에 자연스럽게 적용되어 도심의 모든 공간에서 에너지의 저장과 생산을 할 수 있게 한다. 이를 통해 기존 도심 외부에서 생산되어 저장된 에너지를 송전을 통해 가져와 사용하는 비효율적인 기존 에너지 수급 방식을 벗어나 방, 건물, 도시 단위에서 필요한 에너지를 공간 자체에서 자급자족할 수 있는 현대 도심에 적합한 친환경 에너지 독립형 스마트 시티의 실현을 위한 개념을 확립하였다.
