As urbanization progresses, peri-urban traditional villages are becoming popular tourist destinations. However, they face challenges, including how to attract tourists continuously. These villages often lack an understanding of tourists' needs and effective management strategies. This paper proposes a solution using scientific and design thinking approaches.
The study focuses on Zhujiayu, a traditional village in China. It adopts empirical analysis and service design as research methods. The goal is to improve tourist satisfaction and loyalty, offering practical strategies for governments and tourism companies. The research surveyed 457 tourists in Zhujiayu. Key findings include different tourist motivations, with family bonding being the strongest. Tourist satisfaction is influenced by rest and health motivations positively and experience and relationship motivations negatively. Tourist loyalty is positively influenced by family bonding, cultural aspects, and the village's charm. The study also highlights the need for improving facilities and cultural information. SWOT analysis reveals Zhujiayu's strengths and weaknesses, with opportunities in government support and collaboration with nearby cities. Stakeholder analysis shows complex interactions among tourists, businesses, residents, and authorities. Balancing these relationships is crucial for sustainable tourism development.
This proposal consists of two parts: one is a marketing strategy based on empirical analysis of tourists, and the other is service optimization targeting four specific types of tourists that need to be continuously attracted.
The goal of marketing for Zhujiayu is to deeply explore the overall market from a macro perspective. Empirical analysis of tourists helps in accurately understanding the characteristics, requirements, and preferences of the target market. Such macro-level analysis provides a comprehensive marketing image, clarifies the marketing positioning, and helps establish effective marketing strategies to attract more potential tourists.
Key findings indicate that Zhujiayu primarily targets males aged 30-40, most of whom have high school or college education and monthly incomes ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 yuan. They are mostly from Jinan city, and their travel time to the destination is within 1 hour. Research shows that age, educational background, and income level influence tourists' travel choices and spending behaviors. For instance, middle-aged men in their 30s to 40s with stable economic capabilities are likely to be interested in cultural and historical aspects. Those with high school and college education are more likely to have a deep interest in culture and history. Therefore, Zhujiayu can promote its cultural and historical value to attract this target group. Additionally, considering their origin in Jinan city, Zhujiayu can collaborate with travel agencies in Jinan to offer customized travel packages.
As most tourists gather information through TV/radio and recommendations from relatives, strengthening cooperation with local media and encouraging tourists to share their experiences on social media can be effective in attracting more visitors. Research indicates that the source of information significantly impacts tourists' travel choices, with TV and radio being influential traditional media channels. Zhujiayu can collaborate with local TV and radio stations to create and broadcast special programs about its culture and history. Word-of-mouth recommendations are also effective, so encouraging tourists to share their experiences on social media platforms can attract more potential visitors.
Since most tourists have a limited stay of only 3 hours, increasing experiential activities such as introducing local culture and history or offering handicraft workshops can enhance their satisfaction and prolong their stay. Research suggests that tourists' length of stay is positively related to their spending level and satisfaction. By providing various experiential activities, Zhujiayu can extend tourists' stay and increase their satisfaction. For example, Zhujiayu can organize workshops on local culture and history and invite local artisans to showcase their crafts for tourists to experience.
Considering that tourists choose Zhujiayu mainly for family bonding, cultural learning, and drama culture experiences, promoting the cultural and historical value of Zhujiayu is essential. Research indicates that cultural and historical value is a core competitive Factor for tourist destinations. Tourists' interest and awareness of culture and history significantly influence their choice of destination and satisfaction. Therefore, Zhujiayu should further explore its cultural and historical value, organize cultural and historical seminars, publish books and magazines about its culture and history, and collaborate with drama producers to create and broadcast dramas related to Zhujiayu.
The cost-related attributes of Zhujiayu village have a positive impact on tourist satisfaction but do not significantly affect loyalty. To enhance loyalty, Zhujiayu can consider cost-related measures, such as offering discounts to early bookers, creating family packages to reduce financial burdens for families, providing discounts for specific age groups like students and seniors, and offering special prices to local residents. These proposals aim to provide economic value to different types of tourists while encouraging more people to choose Zhujiayu as their destination.
Building upon the empirical analysis, this service design research aims to delve deeper into specific tourist types. By focusing on four specific tourist groups, personalized and attentive services can be provided to enhance tourist satisfaction and loyalty, thereby ensuring continuous attraction of tourists.
For tourists primarily motivated by experiential activities, Zhujiayu can offer a variety of unique and sensory experiences. Activities such as hands-on traditional craft workshops or inviting local cultural and historical experts to provide in-depth insights can satisfy their desire for unique experiences and deepen their understanding of Zhujiayu's culture and history.
Tourists seeking to strengthen family bonds can be provided with family-friendly activities. Organizing family-oriented activities like picnics or trekking that involve all family members can encourage them to choose Zhujiayu as a family destination. Family packages and discounts can further incentivize family tourism.
Tourists with a strong interest in culture can be offered rich cultural information. Providing detailed information about the traditional village's cultural background, historical stories, and expert-led seminars can fulfill their desire for cultural exploration and learning.
Tourists who prioritize facilities and convenience can benefit from improved infrastructure. Constructing and maintaining roads for easy access, offering high-quality food and accommodation services, and setting up a tourist information center can enhance their travel experience and satisfaction.
The limitations of this study include the specific focus on Zhujiayu and potential data quality issues in the empirical analysis. Future research should involve more comprehensive data collection and analysis to better understand tourists' behaviors and demands.
Future research should also explore innovative tourism operation methods and technologies, such as virtual reality and augmented reality, to provide unique experiences to tourists. Integrating empirical analysis and service design effectively is crucial to complement each other in attracting and satisfying tourists.
