 폴리머 나노메쉬 기반 디바이스는 기존의 웨어러블 디바이스의 단점인 통기성 및 유연성을 개선하기 위해 개발되었다. 이러한 나노메쉬 기반 디바이스는 매우 얇고, 사용자의 움직임을 방해하지 않으며, 피부에 자연스럽게 밀착된다. 또한 나노메쉬의 다공성 구조로 인해 액체 및 기체가 쉽게 통과하여 땀으로 인한 피부 염증 및 가려움 등을 방지한다. 이러한 디바이스의 등각 접촉 및 통기성은 사용자의 불편함을 최소화하는 동시에 장기적인 건강 모니터링을 가능하게 한다.

이러한 장점에도 불구하고 나노메쉬 기반 통기성 디바이스에서 몇 가지 한계점들이 존재한다. 기존의 나노메쉬 기판의 높은 표면 거칠기는 전극 간의 연결이 불안정해진다. 그리고 쉐도우 마스크를 사용하는 기존의 물리적 기상 증착 방식으로는 쉐도우 효과가 나타나 고해상도 미세 패턴 제작이 어렵다. 또한 기판이 가소성 고분자 물질로 이루어져 있어 다양한 휘발성 유기화합물에 취약하다. 이로 인해 포토리소그래피와 같은 미세패턴을 활용한 다양한 디바이스 제작에 한계를 가지고 있다.

따라서 본 연구에서는 이러한 나노메쉬 디바이스 제작의 한계를 극복하고자기존의 쉐도우 마스크를 이용한 물리적 기상 증착의 대안으로 '트랜스퍼 프리팅' 방식을 도입한다. 본 연구에서 제안한 '트랜스퍼 프린팅' 기술은 포토리소그래피 공정 적용을 통해 고해상도의 미세 패턴 제작이 가능해 기존 나노메쉬 디바이스로는 불가능 했던 다중 전극 어레이, 유기 트랜지스터, 마이크로 히터 등의 제작 가능성을 보여준다.
