ABSTRACT 98
This study aims to establish systematic analysis criteria for Korean supplementary textbooks, specifically focusing on workbooks. Workbooks play a critical role in complementing main textbooks and curricula while supporting learners' self-directed learning. However, systematic analysis criteria for workbooks remain underdeveloped. To address this gap, the study analyzed domestic and international research on textbook analysis and evaluation criteria, deriving four major categories and detailed items for workbook analysis.
The study referred to international research, including Cunningsworth (1995), Littlejohn(1998), McGrath(2002), Miekly(2005), Litz(2010), and Abdelwahab(2013), as well as domestic studies, such as those by Lee Hae-Young(2001), Hwang In-Kyo(2003), Kim Young-Sun(2006), the National Institute of Korean Language(2011), Jin Sung-Han (2017), and Hong Jong-Myung et al.(2020). Based on these references, four categories were established: "curriculum analysis", "external analysis of workbooks", "internal analysis of workbooks", and "utilization analysis of workbooks."
Curriculum analysis focuses on whether workbooks faithfully reflect the goals and content of the curriculum and main textbooks, with subcategories including educational objectives, syllabus, and teaching-learning methods. External analysis of workbooks evaluates the physical condition, design, editing, and arrangement of workbooks, examining whether they ensure user convenience and effectively deliver educational content. Internal analysis of workbooks examines both overall and specific structures, focusing on the suitability of educational content and the quality of exercises. Particular emphasis was placed on evaluating the effectiveness of vocabulary, grammar, and skills-based exercises in improving learners' language abilities and their alignment with main textbooks. Utilization analysis of workbooks assesses the practical usability and flexibility of workbooks in real educational environments, including their role in achieving curriculum and textbook objectives.
Based on these criteria, five frequently used introductory-level workbooks were selected for analysis. The results revealed that workbooks are essential tools for supporting learners' achievement of learning objectives and self-directed learning. However, notable limitations were identified, such as insufficient pronunciation and cultural exercises, imbalances in skills-based exercises, and a lack of explanatory materials to aid learners' understanding and practice. This study proposed meaningful and practical improvements to address these issues.
By presenting systematic analysis criteria for workbooks, this study contributes to the development of Korean textbook theory. The proposed analytical framework, considering alignment with main textbooks, provides a basis for objectively evaluating the educational value of workbooks. However, the study is limited by its focus on introductory-level workbooks and insufficient exploration of institutional factors. Future research should expand the scope to include intermediate and advanced-level workbooks, incorporate institutional perspectives, and validate criteria through expert review processes.
