 우리 실생활에서 스마트폰, PC, 자동차, 데이터 센터를 포함한 수많은 제품 및 시설들은 전기 에너지를 필요로 한다. 이 전기 에너지는 제품에 내장된 배터리나 콘센트를 통해 유선으로 직접 공급받기도 한다. 어떠한 에너지원을 이용하든 입력에서 내부 시스템까지 전력을 전달할 때 최소한의 손실을 유지하는 것이 매우 중요한데, 이는 비용과 제품의 열 관리뿐만 아니라 전체적인 에너지 사용 효율성을 높이는 데 필수적인 요소이다.

에너지 효율성을 증가시키기 위해 PMIC(전력 관리 집적 회로)의 입력은 큰 전력을 가능한 높은 전압과 작은 전류를 이용하여 전도 손실을 최소화하려고 하는 반면 내부 시스템은 동작에 사용되는 에너지를 줄이기 위해 사용 전압을 점점 낮추고 있다. PMIC는 큰 입출력 전압 차이에도 불구하고, 에너지 손실을 최소화하며 전력 공급할 수 있어야 된다. 이러한 고효율 시스템 운용은 발열을 줄여 제품의 성능을 최적의 상태로 유지할 수 있으며, 배터리 충전 및 방전 횟수를 줄여 제품의 수명을 연장시킬 수 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 여러 어플리케이션에서 에너지를 효율적으로 공급 및 사용하기 위한 DC-DC 컨버터와 분산형 리니어 레귤레이터를 다룬다.

첫 번째 연구에서는 스마트폰과 같은 소형 제품에서 리튬이온 배터리로부터 내부 시스템에 에너지를 효율적으로 전달할 수 있는 컨버터를 소개한다. 이 컨버터는 스마트폰 규격에 맞는 높이 1 mm 이하의 작은 부피의 인덕터를 사용하여 높은 효율을 달성할 수 있는 항상 하이브리드 이중 경로가 가능한 (ADPR) 스텝다운 컨버터이다. 제안하는 ADPR 스텝다운 컨버터는 배터리 전압 (2.8 - 4.2 V)에도 불구하고 저전압 트랜지스터(1.5 V 또는 3.3 V)만을 이용해서 파워 스위치를 구성하였다. 적응형 모드 전환과 적응형 듀티 변조 기술을 통해 넓은 범위의 동작이 가능하고 전력 변환 효율을 향상시킬 수 있다. 130-nm BCD 공정을 이용하여 제작되었고 외부 소자로 288 mΩ DCR을 가지는 소형 4.7 μH 인덕터와, 10 μF 출력 커패시터, 그리고 두 개의 4.7 μF 플라잉 커패시터를 사용하였다. 이 ADPR 스텝다운 컨버터는 리튬 이온 배터리 전압을 0.7 - 1.1 V 로 변환하며, 인덕터를 통해 출력으로 전달되는 전류를 모든 범위에서 부하 전류 대비 0.42 에서 0.66 사이로 유지하면서 최대 95.4%의 효율을 보인다.

하나의 전자 제품에는 다양한 기능을 수행하는 여러 시스템이 내장되어 있다. 하지만 외부에서 공급받을 수 있는 전압은 대개 한 종류의 전압이기 때문에, 에너지를 효율적으로 사용하기 위해서는 내부에서 각 시스템에 적절한 수준의 여러 전압으로 분할하는 과정이 필수적이다. 이러한 조건을 충족하면서 면적과 비용을 절감할 수 있는 단일 인덕터 다중 출력 (SIMO) 컨버터가 널리 사용된다. 기존 SIMO 컨버터들은 느린 로드 트랜지언트 반응, 큰 출력 전압 리플, 낮은 효율 등의 내제된 문제점들이 있다. 이러한 문제점들을 효과적으로 해결하기 위해 본 연구에서는 두 출력 사이에 추가적인 전류 경로 형성을 위한 커패시터와 보완적인적응형 스위칭 레귤레이션 방식을 적용하였다. 180-nm CMOS 공정으로 칩을 제작하여 검증한 결과로드 트랜지언트 성능은 0.21 mV/mA, 최대 효율은 94.9%, 그리고 모든 동작 범위에서 전체 효율을 90%이상을 유지하였다.

시스템에는 고효율로 에너지를 활용하기 위한 인덕터를 이용한 DC-DC 컨버터도 필요하지만, 고품질의 전원을 공급하기 위해서는 리니어 레귤레이터의 내장이 필수적이다. 이러한 구성은 시스템의 전체적인 에너지 효율과 전원 공급의 질을 동시에 보장할 수 있습니다. 내장된 리니어 레귤레이터는 전력 전달 경로를 단축시키고 피드백 경로도 짧게 하여, 더 정확한 레귤레이션 성능과 빠른 로드 트랜지언트 반응을 보장할 수 있다. 하지만 큰 사이즈의 칩에서 리니어 레귤레이터를 한쪽 모퉁이에 배치하게 되면, 거리가 먼 부하 로드까지 전원을 공급하는 과정에서 파워 그리드의 기생 저항성분으로 인해 로드 트랜지언트 성능이 떨어지고 전압 강하가 발생할 수 있다. 또한, 레귤레이터가 배치된 곳에서는 발열과 관련된 문제가 발생할 수 있다. 마지막 연구에서는 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해 분산형 리니어 레귤레이터에 관한 연구를 진행하였다. 제안하는 분산형 리니어 레귤레이터는 외부 구성 요소 없이 칩 내부에 복제 기반의 전류 분배 보정 회로를 적용하여 0.5 - 3.2%의 작은 전류 분배 오차를 달성하였다. 또한, 3.5 μA 의 낮은 대기 전류와 저전압 및 고전압 프로세스에 적용 가능한 범용 설계를 특징으로 한다. 제안된 분산형 리니어 레귤레이터는 4.5 - 60 V 의 입력 범위, 1.2 - 5 V 의 출력 범위, 그리고 최대 1 A 까지의 전류 공급이 가능하며 넓은 동작 범위를 제공한다.
