기존의 저온형 고분자전해질 연료전지(LT-PEFC)를 기반의 건물용 연료전지는 전기와 온열만을 공급하는 열병합 (CHP) 발전 방식으로 열수요가 감소하는 하절기 및 간절기에는 배열을 효과적으로 활용하기 어려워 경제성이 다소 떨어진다는 단점이 있다. 이에 반해 인산으로 담지된 고분자 막을 사용하는 고온 고분자전해질 연료전지(HT-PEFC)는 발전 성능은 조금 낮아지지만 작동 온도가 120℃ 이상으로 높기에 양질의 배열을 냉열 생성에 활용하는데 매우 유용하며 사계절의 에너지 수요에 맞춰 전기, 온열, 냉열을 적절하게 공급하는 삼중열병합 (CCHP) 발전에 적합하다.

데이터센터는 1년 내내 전기와 냉열 수요가 동시에 있는 건물로 삼중 열병합 시스템이 적용되기에 적합한 대상이다. 고온 고분자전해질 연료전지 기반의 삼중열병합 시스템은 순수 수소를 이용하면 탄소 배출을 전혀 하지 않고, 발전하는 동안 높은 온도의 폐열을 회수하여 냉열을 제공할 수 있어 데이터센터의 막대한 에너지 소비를 절감시키며 탄소배출량을 저감시킬 수 있는 해결책으로 여겨진다. 그러나 지금까지 데이터센터에 적용되는 연료전지 시스템 연구는 대부분 열 회수 효율이 낮은 저온형 고분자전해질 연료전지에 집중되어왔기 때문에 높은 전체 시스템 효율을 달성하기 어려웠다. 또한 연료전지의 수명과 비용은 시스템 상용화를 제한하는 주요 요인으로 데이터센터의 에너지 수요 동특성에 따라 연료전지의 발전 용량과 운전 최적화를 통해 효율을 최대화 하거나 비용을 최소화나는 전략이 필요하지만 충분히 시도되지 않았다.

따라서 본 연구에서는 데이터센터용 고온 고분자연료전지 기반의 삼중열병합 시스템을 제안하며 모델링 및 시뮬레이션 분석을 통해 연료 전지의 운전 최적화를 수행하였고 제안 시스템의 구체적인 실현 가능성을 제시하기 위해 경제성 성능 분석을 수행하여 실제 데이터센터 적용에의 잠재적 가능성을 확인하였다.

제 1장에서는 연료전지의 기본 원리와 고온 고분자 전해질의 특장점에 대한 이해를 집중하여 소개하며 적용 대상인 데이터센터에 삼중열병합 시스템을 도입해야 할 필요성과 본 논문에서 제안되는 시스템에 대해 간략히 기술하였다.

제 2장에서는 공정 모사 프로그램(g-PROMS)을 사용하여 모델링 기반의 시뮬레이션 연구를 수행하였다. 결과적으로 스택 운전 조건에 따른 시스템 발전 효율, 스택 회수 열량 및 온도, 계절별 냉각수 입구 온도 변화, 냉수 온도, 냉열 효율, 냉방 용량을 예측하는 시뮬레이션을 통해 제안하는 시스템의 전체 효율이 95%이상, 냉동기 효율 1.2 이상의 시스템 성능을 갖기 위한 조건을 해석하였다. 해당 결과물은 운전조건에 따라 변화되는 시스템의 영향을 분석하고 이를 기반으로 삼중열병합 전체 시스템에서 최적화를 위해 요구되는 운전조건을 예측하는 도구로 사용하였다.

제 3장에서는 데이터센터의 연간 에너지 수요 데이터를 반영하여 연료전지와 히트펌프를 연계한 삼중열병합 시스템의 운전 최적화 (Optimization)를 위한 시뮬레이션 연구를 수행하였다. 열 추종 또는 전기 추종 방법의 운전을 통해 시스템의 효율을 최대화하거나 또는 운전 중의 이산화탄소 배출을 최소화할 수 있는 운전 방법을 제시하는 결과를 얻었다.

제 4장에서는 제안 시스템과 기존의 그리드 전력 시스템의 경쟁력을 비교하기 위해 시스템의 경제성 성능 분석을 수행하였다. 이를 위해 평가 지표로 균등화발전비용의 개념을 도입하여 삼중열병합 시스템을 평가하는 새로운 지표를 개발하였다. 해당 결과물은 현재 시점과 미래 시점에 있어 가장 큰 경쟁력을 갖는 시스템의 운전 방법을 제시하며, 각 시나리오에 따른 경제적으로 실현 가능한 임계 수소가격을 제시하였다.
