고품질의 투명 Yttria (Y₂O₃)는 dry pressing, gel casting 및 slip casting 등을 포함한 다양한 성형 기술을 사용하여 생산될 수 있다, 투명 Y₂O₃ 에 관한 연구가 증가함에 따라 레이저 렌즈 및 센서 보호와 같은 복잡한 구조에 적용하려는 수요가 증가하고 있다. 그러나 성형 공정들의 기하학적 제어 한계는 투명 Y₂O₃ 의 활용 및 적용을 저해할 것이다.

본 논문에서는 이러한 구조적 단점에 대한 최고의 해결책 중 하나로 Digital light processing (DLP) 기반 적층 제조 (AM)를 제안한다. 투명 세라믹 AM 은 최근 인기를 얻고 있지만, 제한된 투명도와 단순한 형상으로 인한 문제에 직면해 있다. 본 연구에서는 3D 구조의 투명 Y₂O₃ 세라믹을 진공 소결과 개발된 3D 연마 기술을 이용한 DLP 기반 AM 기술을 통해 구현하였다. 이를 통해 투명도를 좌우하는 중요한 요소들을 확인하였다.

먼저 고투명 Y₂O₃ 세라믹을 구현하기 위해 소결 첨가제를 도입한 후 유변학적 특성을 평가하여 슬러리 내부의 파우더 함량을 극대화하여 성형체 (green body) 밀도를 높였다. 그리고 균열에 의한 투과 손실을 최소화하기 위해 탈지 공정의 최적화를 구현하였다. 또한 예비 소결 (pre-sintering) 공정을 통해 탈지 후 남은 열린 기공을 대부분 제거하여 진공 소결 전 상대 밀도를 향상시켰다. 투명 Y₂O₃ 세라믹은 1350℃에서 예비 소결하고 1800℃에서 진공 소결한 후 이론적 한계의 94.86%에 달하는 높은 투과율과 미세입자의 조밀한 미세구조를 구현함으로써 99.89%의 상대 밀도를 달성하였다.

둘째, Y₂O₃ 의 투과율과 표면 거칠기에 AM 변수, 특히 층 두께가 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 프린팅 층 두께가 세라믹 입자의 크기에 가까워지거나 작아지면 성형체의 층 사이와 층 내에 많은 기공이 형성되었다. 이는 성형체의 밀도를 감소시켜 궁극적으로 투과율을 감소시켰다. 이에 비해 층 두께가 증가함에 따라 성형체의 기공 수가 감소하여 밀도가 꾸준히 증가하고 궁극적으로 광학적 및 기계적 특성이 향상되었다. 그 결과 45 µm 의 층 두께에서 Y₂O₃ 가 이론적 한계의 97.73%에 달하는 가장 우수한 투과율을 나타내었다. 또한 층 두께가 증가함에 따라 표면 거칠기가 감소하는 것으로 나타났다.

마지막으로, 3D 구조 Y₂O₃ 세라믹에서 표면 거칠기가 투과율에 미치는 악영향을 완화하기 위한 후처리를 위해 3D 연마 기술이 개발되었다. 이 기술은 진동을 이용한 화학- 기계 연마 기술 (vibration-assisted chemical-mechanical polishing technique)을 활용한다. 이를 통해 약 95.42%의 상당한 표면 거칠기 감소가 이루어졌으며, 약 66.12%의 투과율이 상승하였다. 이에 제작된 Y₂O₃ 자이로이드 구조체는 주목할 만한 수준의 투명성을 보여주며, 렌즈 어레이는 만족스러운 광학 이미징 성능을 발휘한다.

결과적으로 본 연구를 통해 원료 선택부터 열처리, 프린팅 변수, 후처리 기술인 3D 연마의 정밀한 제어까지 모든 측면을 세심하게 관리하여 광학적, 기계적 특성이 우수한 3D 투명 Y₂O₃ 세라믹을 DLP 기반 3D 프린팅으로 성공적으로 제작하였다. 또한, 투명 Y₂O₃ 세라믹은 구조적 측면에서 성공적으로 변형되어 그 적용 범위를 확장할 수 있었다.
