음이온 교환막 수전해는 비귀금속 기반 촉매를 활용할 수 있는 지속 가능한 수소 생산 기술로 주목받고 있다. 그러나 전이금속 기반 촉매는 일반적으로 귀금속에 비해 낮은 활성 및 내구성을 보여 실용화에 어려움을 겪고 있다. 이러한 한계를 극복하기 위해, 본 연구에서는 전기화학적 성능 향상을 목적으로 전이금속 인화물 촉매를 구조적으로 제어하는 세 가지 전해도금 기반 전략을 제시하였다.
첫 번째 연구에서는 구리 나노와이어를 사용하여 전기화학적 활성 표면적을 크게 증가시키고, CoMoP 촉매의 균일한 전착을 유도함으로써 수소 발생 반응 성능을 향상시켰다. 제작된 CoMoP/Cu NWs 촉매는 수소 발생 반응에서 10 mA cm⁻² 조건에서 36시간 연속 운전 후, 초기 성능의 88%를 유지하는 안정성을 보였다.
두 번째 연구에서는 동적 수소 기포 주형 전해도금과 KSCN을 활용한 선택적 Ni 용출 공정을 연계하여 다공성 NiFeP 촉매를 제조하였다. 이 과정을 통해 Ni/Fe (oxy)hydroxide 표면이 형성된 고표면적 구조가 구현되었으며 산소 발생 반응 활성이 개선되었다. 최적화된 NiFeP 촉매는 100 mA cm⁻²에서 269 mV의 산소 발생 반응 과전압을 보였으며, 단전지에서 양극으로 적용 시 1.0 A cm⁻²에서 1.70 V의 낮은 전압으로 구동되었다. 또한, 500 mA cm⁻²에서 100시간 구동 시 시간당 0.24 mV에 불과한 성능 저하율을 나타냈다.
세 번째 연구에서는 수직 정렬된 ZnO 나노로드를 주형으로 사용하여 이원기능성 NiFe-NiMoP 촉매를 합성하였다. 순차적 전해도금을 통해 수소 발생 반응 활성을 갖는 NiMoP와 산소 발생 반응 활성을 갖는 NiFe이 통합된 구조로 설계되었으며, 수소 및 산소 발생 반응에서 100 mA cm⁻² 기준 각각 132 mV와 290 mV의 과전압을 달성하였다. 막-전극 접합체 기반 평가에서는 1.0 A cm⁻²에서 1.72 V의 셀 전압으로 작동하였고, 500 mA cm⁻² 조건에서 200시간 구동 후 1.07 mV h-1의 낮은 성능 저하율을 기록하였다.
이러한 결과는 전해도금 기반의 다양한 구조 제어 전략(예: 나노와이어, 선택적 용출을 통한 다공성 구조, 나노로드 구조 등)이 전이금속 인화물 촉매의 전기화학적 활성을 효과적으로 향상시킬 수 있음을 보여준다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 높은 활성도와 우수한 내구성, 뛰어난 확장성을 갖춘 음이온 교환막 수전해 촉매 설계를 위한 합리적인 전략을 제안한다. 특히, 제안된 구조 제어 기반 촉매 설계 전략은 향후 고효율 수전해 시스템 개발 및 그린 수소의 상용화에 기여할 수 있는 기술로 활용될 수 있다.*표시는 필수 입력사항입니다.
