초록보기

 광전기화학(PEC) 물 분해는 태양에너지를 직접 활용하여 친환경 수소를 생산할 수 있는 유망한 기술이다. PEC 셀의 실질적인 수소 생산을 위해서는 고효율의 광흡수층, 전하 분리층, 그리고 반응 선택성이 우수한 촉매의 개발이 필수적이다. 다양한 광흡수 소재 중에서도, 높은 bias-free 수소 생산 효율을 달성하면서도 저비용 소자 제작이 가능한 Cu 기반 산화물 광음극은 매우 유망한 대안으로 주목받고 있다. 본 논문에서는 전기화학적 접근을 통해 다층 구조를 설계함으로써 PEC 수소 생산 효율을 극대화하는 전략을 제안한다. 구체적으로, 본 연구에서는 전기화학적으로 설계된 (ⅰ) 고효율 Cu 산화물 광흡수층의 합성, (ⅱ) 기능성 버퍼층의 형성, (ⅲ) 결정질 나노입자 촉매의 제조를 통해 통합 셀의 solar-to-hydrogen 효율을 개선하는 방법을 제시한다.

2장에서는 고효율 Cu₂O 광흡수층을 구현하기 위해 동일 전해질 내에서 순간적으로 Cu 나노입자(Cu NPs)를 형성하고, 이를 핵으로 하여 (111) 우선 성장하는 bundle-type 다결정 Cu₂O를 합성하여 전하 재결합을 억제하는 방안을 제안한다. 또다른 Cu 기반 산화물 중 유망 소재인 CuBi₂O₄ 광음극의 기존 다공성 구조 및 낮은 결정성 문제를 해결하기 위해, Sb가 도핑된 Cu₂O 버퍼층(Sb-Cu₂O)을 전기화학적으로 먼저 형성한 후 그 위에 CuBi₂O₄를 전착하는 공정을 개발했다. Sb-Cu₂O 버퍼층은 전착 시 균일한 전기장을 제공하며, 열처리 과정에서 Cu를 추가로 공급하여 높은 결정성을 갖는 CuBi₂O₄ 형성을 유도하여 수소 생산 성능을 높였다.

3장에서는 기존에 ALD 공정에만 의존하던 Ga₂O₃ 버퍼층 증착의 한계를 극복하고자, 전기화학적 방법을 이용한 Ga₂O₃ 박막 형성 전략을 제시한다. Cu₂O가 가진 높은 NO₃- 환원 선택성을 활용하여 gallium nitrate를 전구체로 사용하고, 음의 인가 전압 조건에서 Cu₂O 표면에 OH-가 공급되어 국부적인 pH 상승을 유도함으로써 Ga₂O₃를 형성하는 방식을 구현했다. 이를 통해 Cu₂O의 광전압을 효과적으로 향상시키고, bias-free 수소 생산 효율을 방안을 제시한다.

4장에서는 귀금속 촉매의 양을 최소화하면서도 고효율 PEC 반응을 달성할 수 있는 새로운 촉매 증착 방법인 redox photoelectrodeposition(rx-PED)을 제안한다. 본 공정은 광전기화학 조건에서 촉매를 직접 전착하며, atomic- 또는 nanoscale 수준으로 제어할 수 있는 특징을 가진다. 특히, 산성 조건에서도 안정하게 작동 가능한 고결정성 Rh₂P 촉매를 전기화학적으로 합성하고, 이를 통해 수소 생산 성능과 안정성을 동시에 확보하고자 했다.
