 수분이 포함된 재료의 혼합은 바이오, 화장품, 식품 등 다양한 산업 분야에서 널리 활용되고 있다. 수분이 존재할 경우 재료 간의 응집력과 점착성이 증가하며 벽면에 부착되는 현상이 발견된다. 이는 건조한 재료와는 다른 혼합 양상을 유발하고 혼합 예측을 어렵게 만든다. 본 연구는 수평 혼합기 내에서 함수율 변화에 따라 달라지는 점착성, 응집력, 부착력 등을 고려하여 혼합 거동을 분석하는데 목적이 있다.

수평 혼합기에서 주로 사용되는 리본 블레이드와 페들 블레이드를 활용하여 주 혼합 메커니즘이 전단 기반 유동과 충돌 분산 유동 상황을 고려하였다. 전단 기반 유동은 응집된 상태가 유지되어 입자 특성의 영향을 분석하기에 적합하며 충돌 분산 유동의 경우 응집을 해제시키지만 구조 요인에 민감하게 반응하여 구조 설계 요소의 영향을 분석하기에 유리하다.

수분이 있는 재료의 혼합 특성을 실험과 Discrete Element Method (DEM) 해석을 통해 파악하였다. 실험을 위해서는 혼합 시간 동안 함수량이 변하지 않고, 압력이 가해지더라도 수분이 유지되어야 한다. 이러한 조건을 만족하는 재료로 입자 형태의 고흡수성수지 (SAP)를 사용하였다. SAP는 수분이 공급되면 팽창하며, 외부 압력이 가해져도 수분을 잃지 않고 유지하는 특성이 있다. 이로 인해 함수량 조절이 용이하다는 장점이 있다. SAP 입자를 활용한 마찰계수 측정 실험을 통해 DEM에 적용되는 변수를 결정하였다. 혼합도 평가는 Lacey Mixing Index (LMI)와 Relative Standard Deviation (RSD)을 활용하였다.

전단 기반 유동 실험에서 함수율 0%, 60%, 80%, 90%의 혼합 특성을 관찰하였다. 60% 함수율에서 응집력과 저항이 가장 큼을 확인하였고 0%인 건조한 입자와 함수율 90%에서 분산성이 컸으며 혼합이 빠름이 확인되었다. 이는 함수율에 따른 수분의 영향이 비선형적으로 작용함을 의미한다.

충돌 분산 유동 실험은 앞선 실험에서 가장 차이가 컸던 건조한 입자와 함수율 60% 입자를 사용하여 수행하였다. 실험계획법을 통해 페들 혼합기의 최적 조건을 도출하였으며, 설계요인은 페들의 각도와 페들 블레이드의 회전속도로 설정하였다. 수분의 유무에 따라 최적 구조 조건이 달라졌으며, 특히 페들 각도가 미치는 영향이 큰 것으로 나타났다.

본 연구에서는 혼합에서 수분의 영향을 확인하기 위해 SAP 입자를 사용하여 실험과 DEM 해석을 진행하였다. 주 혼합 메커니즘이 다른 두 상황에서의 영향을 확인하였고 수분이 혼합도에 영향을 줌을 확인하였다. 또한 일정 수준의 혼합도에 도달하기 위한 최적 조건이 함수율에 따라 달라짐을 확인하였다.
