냉전체제라는 큰 톱니바퀴가 한국분단이라는 작은 톱니바퀴를 돌리고 있는 구조에 대한 인식은 냉전시대 한국 국제정치학의 발전을 촉진시켰다. 그렇다면 거꾸로 냉전의 주변부였다고 볼 수 있는 한국에서의 전쟁이 냉전에 미친 영향은 무엇이었을까? 첫째, 한국전쟁은 냉전적 대치상태를 격화시키고, 그 구조를 봉인했다. '이룰 수 없는 평화'로서의 냉전이라는 구조를 완성시킨 것이다. 둘째, 한국전쟁은 냉전이 열전으로 변모되지 않도록 하는 국제적 체제의 형성에 기여했다. 한국전쟁은 '이룰 수 없는 평화'로서의 냉전체제 뿐만 아니라 '일어날 것 같지 않은 전쟁'으로서의 냉전체제가 구성되는 과정에도 영향을 미쳤던 것이다.

Between the international Cold War system and Korea interaction existed. Although the influence of the Cold War system on Korea was greater, the reversal constitutive process, if asymmetrical, also existed. On the Cold War, then, what was the impact of the conflict in Korea which can be said to be a periphery of the Cold War? First, the Korean War aggravated the confrontation of the Cold War, and established the structure of "the impossible peace." Due to this structure, many incidents and happenings in the Cold War period, no matter how trivial or serious, tended to escalate confrontation of the two camps. Second, the Korean War had contributed to the construction of international regime which prevented the transformation of the Cold War into a hot war. Henceforth, the impact of the Korean War on the Cold War system can be found not only in the structure of "impossible peace" but also in the structure of "improbable war."
