The purpose of this paper is to examine the roles of women in “The Dead” of Dubliners. This episode of Joyce has generally been considered as a male-oriented work. Clearly the work is dominated by a male figure, Gabriel Conroy, who is Gretta's husband and has patriarchal authority over women. He is a potentially oppressive patriarch in symbolic collaboration with the ruling masters of English colonial empire. His male-chauvinism, however, gradually eroded and finally destructed by three women, Lily, Molly Ivors and Gretta. Lily challenges Gabriel's masculinity and his mastery, refusing to act as the child he expects of her. Molly Ivors, the outspoken Irish Nationalist, openly stands for something he fears and has repressed, his inevitable “Irishness”. She also accuses him of writing for The Daily Express, a conservative paper with royalist leanings. Gabriel loses his composure when Molly urges him, instead of visiting the Continent, to see his own country, preferably the West, a suggestion his wife eagerly seconds. He is assailed by “a shameful consciousness of his own person”, when Gretta revelates the early love affair with Michael Furey and shows her sympathy for the loved one. Gretta, however, in particular is the representative of virtuous women in Dublin society at that time. While Lily and Miss Ivors have a variety of active and positive interactions with Gabriel Conroy, the only male character in the work, Gretta plays the most important role of making him recognize the humanity of men and women and think over the identity of himself in all senses. As a result, they all overwhelmingly impact on the destruction of Gabriel's inflated ego and his patriarchal authority. I insist, therefore, that the female protagonist(s) of the episode should be regarded as the embryos of active and positive women from feminist view.
