The purpose of this study is to analyze contents of the English textbooks for the 5th and 6th graders of the elementary school, to compare them with the aims of the 7th curriculum, and finally to provide suggestions for improving the English textbooks. The study used the criteria prescribed in the curriculum: communicative functions, topics, culture, vocabulary, and sentence length. The results of the analysis reveals that the contents of the textbooks, by and large, accord with the guideline the 7the curriculum. However, the cultural contents of the textbooks are very limited in terms of its coverage of the target culture. In conclusion, the textbooks need adding practical and realistic cultural contents to help improving learners' communicative competence.
