본 연구는 확장된 환경중심 언어중재(Enhanced Milieu Teaching: EMT) 가 발달장애 아동의 의사소통 능력에 미치는 효과를 알아보는 데 있다. 연구 대상은 발달장애 유아 3명이다. 실험은 대상자간 중다기초선 설계를 하여, 중재와 유지 효과가 있는지 알아보았다. 그 결과 확장된 환경중심 언어중재전략은 아동의 자발발화, 평균발화길이(MLU), 새로운 어휘 습득의 증가에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구에서 사용한 EMT는 기존의 환경중심언어중재를 보완한 방법으로 과거의 단순한 요구하기 등 특정 목표 언어만이 아니라 평균발화길이, 어휘 및 구문 확장, 등 즘 더 포괄적인 발화 능력을 향상시키는데 목표를 두고 있다.
