이 연구의 목적은 창의성과 학습동기의 관계를 파악하는 것이었다. 이를 위해 4가지의 연구내용이 제시되었다. 첫째 연구내용은 내재동기와 창의성의 관계가 외재동기와 창의성의 관계보다 더 큰지 확인하고, 방향성은 같은지 탐색하는 것이었다. 둘째 연구내용은 학습동기와의 관계에서 창의적 동기, 태도, 능력이 상이한 크기를 보이는지 탐색하는 것이었다. 셋째 연구내용은 이 연구의 주된 분석으로서 창의성과 학습동기의 관계구조를 파악하는 것이었다. 넷째 연구내용은 창의성과 학습동기의 관계구조가 어느 정도로 일반화될 수 있는지 살피는 것이었다. 연구대상은 영재학생이 포함된 초등학교 5, 6학년 학생 507명이었다. 창의성은 통합창의성에 근거하여 개발된 박병기·강현숙(2006)의 도구에서 발췌하여 측정하였다. 학습동기는 목표지향성과 자기결정성을 포괄하였는데, 목표지향성은 박병기·이종욱(2005)에서, 자기결정성은 박병기·이종욱·홍승표(2005)에서 발췌하여 측정하였다. 통계분석은 상관분석과 정준상관분석이 활용되었다. 첫째 연구내용으로서 창의성과 학습동기의 상관행렬을 분석한 결과, 내재동기가 외재동기보다 창의성과의 관계가 더 큰 것으로 확인되었다. 관계의 방향성은 반대로 나타났다. 둘째 연구내용의 분석결과, 학습동기와의 관계크기에서 창의적 동기, 태도, 능력은 별다른 차이가 없었다. 셋째 연구내용으로서 창의성과 학습동기의 관계구조를 분석한 결과, 하나의 관계구조가 유의미하게 해석 가능하였다. 관계구조에서 두 정준변인은 통합창의성과 통합학습동기로 의미화 할 수 있었다. 넷째 연구내용으로서 집단의 종류에 관계없이 창의성과 학습동기의 관계구조는 유사한 양상을 보임으로서 일반화 가능성이 높음을 보여주었다. 창의성과 학습동기의 관계와 관련하여 이 연구가 가진 의의와 시사점이 논의되었다.
