이 연구는 청소년비행의 원인이 성별로 차이가 있는지 기존의 주요 이론 사회통제이론, 차별접촉/사회학습이론, 긴장이론, 일반이론의 주요 요인들을 적용하여 청소년패널 조사자료를 통해 살펴보려고 하였다.

본 연구의 결과는 첫째, 가정요인들은 남녀모두에서 유의미하지 않았으며, 초등학교 저연령에서 영향력이 클 것이라는 예측과 달리 두 연령집단 모두에서 그 영향력이 적은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 학교요인은 사회유대요인인 학교공부관여만이 유의미한 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 친구요인으로 긴장이론에서의 친구관계긴장은 여자의 경우보다는 남자의 경우에서 유의미하였고 초등학생보다는 중학생에서 유의미한 것으로 나타났다. 비행친구의 영향력은 초등학생과 중학생 모두에서 남자보다는 여자에게서 그 영향력이 더 큰 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 개인성향인 낮은 자기통제력의 영향력은 본 연구의 예측대로 남녀모두에서 중요한 것으로 나타났다.

이 연구를 통해 볼 때 청소년비행의 원인은 성별로도 다소 차이가 있었고, 연령별로도 다소 차이가 있는 것을 알 수 있었다. 하지만 전체적으로 볼 때 청소년비행의 원인으로는 비행친구와의 접촉과 낮은 자기통제력이 중요한 원인임을 알 수 있었다. 이 연구는 고등학생의 자료가 없었다는 점에 아쉬움이 남는다. 앞으로의 연구에서는 다양한 집단별로 더 많은 연구가 이루어지길 바란다.

This study intends to test whether there is a gender difference in explaining delinquency. This work tests social bond, differential association/social learning, strain, and a general theory of delinquency and identifies several explanatory factors. In addition, to test a developmental perspective that the factor underling delinquency is different across different age groups(elementary vs middle school students), we use KYPS data from two different age groups.

Results show that family factors have no significant effects on delinquency in both male and female students. Second, the effect of commitment to scholastic activities is more important in explaining delinquency of middle school students but there is no gender difference. Third, the effects of association with delinquent peers is significant in both male and female students across two age groups. However, strain with peers is more important factor in male middle school students. Fourth, the effects of self-control is significant in both male and female students across two age groups. However, its effect is significant on minor delinquency but mediated by association with delinquent peers on major delinquency.

Overall, results show that there are gender differences in explaining delinquency and the effects of those important factors are also different across two age groups. In addition, findings reveal that those effects can be different across types of delinquency. However, association with delinquent peers and low self-control are more important explanatory factors in both male and female students. The policy implications of those results are discussed.
