The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of concentric isokinetic knee strength training on muscle strength, pattern of muscle weakness and gait in chronic ambulatory stroke patients.
Fifteen patients with chronic ambulatory stroke were participated in this study. All subjects were community ambulators and trained using Biodex System 3 isokinetic dynamometer 3 times a week for 6 weeks program consisting of reciprocal knee extension and flexion concentric isokinetic strength training on both knee. Peak isokinetic quadriceps and hamstring torque, walking performance (temporospatial parameter of gait, timed stair climb) were evaluated from before and after training period.
Muscle strength improved significantly after training. Hamstring/quadriceps muscle strength ratio in paretic limb at 30˚/sec and 60˚/sec decreased significantly than that in non-paretic limb. Paretic/non-paretic strength ratio (%) in hamstring muscle at 30˚/sec and 60˚/sec decreased significantly than that in quadriceps muscle. After training, hamstring/quadriceps muscle strength ratio and paretic/non-paretic strength ratio (%) increased, but not significant. Speed, stride length among temporospatial parameters and timed stair climb improved significantly after training (p<0.05).
Significant gains in muscle strength and walking performance were possible after short-term isokinetic resistance training program for chronic ambulatory stroke patients. Improvement in muscle strength, but not pattern of muscle weakness, appeared to transfer to functional improvements. So isokinetic resistance training program would be a effective rehabilitation program for chronic stroke survivors & further investigations in long-term effect and development of strength-specific resistance training program may be indicated.| 번호 | 참고문헌 | 국회도서관 소장유무 |
