In this study, the present situation in research into discourse using spoken language is examined. First, the definitions of “spoken language” and “discourse” are explained as the range of research will depend on them. “Discourse” is a piece of terminology that can be used for a structure with written language as well, but in this study it is referred to as a structure consisted with spoken language. The most studied area in research into discourse using spoken language is discourse markers. Discourse markers clarify the usage of language expression in discourse and thus are a popular research theme which shows the characteristics of spoken language which are different from written language. There have also been researches on speech acts to reveal the intention of the speaker, detailed researches on subtypes of discourse, researches on the structure and units of discourse and researches on the coherence devices for discourse. In addition, there have been studies on comparative researches on characteristics between spoken and written languages. The problems in research into discourse using spoken language can include limited reference resources and limited research areas. In fact, studies based on actual spoken corpus take up only 50% of total research volume. It can also be pointed out that there has been a shortage of studies in areas other than discourse markers.
