본 연구는 노무현 전대통령의 장례식에서 한국인이 보인 적극적인 추모행위를 정치적인 표현으로 해석해야 할 것인지, 문화적 표현으로 해석해야 할 것인지를 살펴보는 것이다. 즉 노무현 전대통령의 장례식 참여 및 추모를 향후 정치적 변화의 전조로 이해해야 할 것인지, 정치적인 영향은 미치지 않는 서거에 대한 문화표현으로 이해해야 할 것인지를 살펴보았다. 연구대상으로는 대학생들이 노무현 전대통령 장례식에 적극적으로 참여 또는 관심을 표명하고 있고, 이들이 노무현 전대통령의 서거를 정치적으로 이해할 가능성이 많다는 것을 가정하여 대학생들의 의식조사를 중심으로 하였다. 연구 결과, 대다수의 대학생들은 장례식에 대해 추모 및 애도에 의미를 가지고 있었고, 이러한 대학생들은 노무현 전대통령의 서거에 대해 비정치적으로 인식하는 경향을 보였다. 반면, 평등 가치를 지향하고, 야당 국회의원 후보를 지지하며, 정치적 관심이 강한 소수 대학생들은 노무현 전대통령 서거를 정치적으로 해석하는 경향을 보였다. 또한 대학생의 성, 소득, 지역 등의 사회?경제적 배경 대부분이 노무현 전대통령 서거에 대한 정치적 인식에 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다.

This paper examines Korean citizen's attitudes towards the former Korean president Roh Moo-hyun's suicide and their participatory activities in the memorial rally. It attempts to illuminate whether their active participation was politically oriented activity or apolitical cultural performance. In other words, the paper tries to investigate whether citizen's activities in the funeral rally can be read as a sign of political changes in Korean society or cultural expressions without any political connotation. In order to answer the question, the paper carried out a survey of university students' attitudes towards ex-president Rho's death and funeral. Presupposing that university students are active participants in Roh's funeral ceremony and tend to understand his death in a political way, the research examined how they interpret Roh's death and its meaning in Korean society. The survey shows that a majority of students participated in the funeral to express their condolences on Rho's sudden death and they tend to interpret his death in non-political way. Meanwhile, politically oriented students who put a high value on equality and support the opposition party tend to understand Rho's death politically and ideologically. The research also shows that socio-economic variables such as gender, income, region, etc. do not affect their political attitudes towards Rho's death and the funeral.
