본 연구에서는 제7차 교육과정의 환경 교과서 및 2007년 개정 교육과정의 환경 교과서에 사용된 시각자료의 개수, 종류와 기능을 분석해 봄으로써 환경 교육에 있어 시각자료의 중요성을 인지하고, 교과서에서 차지하는 시각자료의 비중을 통해 시각자료의 올바른 해석이 중요함을 부각시키고자 하였다. 환경 교과서에는 1쪽 당 평균 1.53-2.40개의 시각자료가 사용되고 있었으며 2007 개정 교육과정의 교과서에 그 수가 대폭 증가하였다. 시각자료의 표제는 평균 72.5%와 64.1%의 시각자료에 사용되었는데, 시각자료가 본문에 인용된 경우는 평균 5% 이하로 매우 적었다. 시각자료의 종류로 사진과 그림, 표가 가장 많이 사용되었고 시각자료의 기능은 예시적 기능과 보충적 기능이 가장 많았다. 학생들은 자신과 친숙한 시각자료를 선호하는 경향이 있었다. 환경 시각자료의 이해 과정을 환경 교육의 목표를 고려한 기호학적 모형으로 분석해 보았다. 이를 통해 환경 교육에서 시각자료의 교육적 활용에 대한 시사점을 논의하였다.

This study investigates the types, functions and numbers of the inscriptions presented in environment textbooks of the 7th National Curriculum and those of the revised curriculum in 2007. This study emphasized both the importance of the use of the inscriptions in textbooks and the importance of the correct interpretation of them. Environmental textbooks have an average 1.53 to 2.40 inscriptions per page. The caption was used in 72.5% and 64.1% of inscriptions, but about 5% of the inscriptions were indexed in the main text. The most prevalent type of the inscriptions were photographs, drawings, and tables. The function of inscription was mainly illustrative and complementary. Students showed the tendency of preference for inscriptions familiar to them. We analyzed the process of understanding environmental inscriptions using the semiotic model considering the goal of environmental education. Educational implications were discussed for the use of inscriptions in environmental education.
