이번 연구에서는 최근 급격한 구조조정을 겪고 있는 자영자들의 계층의식에 대해 계층지위 인식·계층이동성 평가·노조기능 평가를 중심으로 다른 종사상 지위와 계급지위의 집단들과 비교하여 어떠한 차이를 보이는지, 그리고 자영자집단 내부의 이질성이 어떻게 나타나고 있는지를 살펴본다. 자영자집단이 고용주(또는 자본가)와 상용직 노동자에 비해 낮은 사회경제적 지위에 놓여 있는 것으로 인식하는 한편, 임시일용직의 비정규 노동자들에 비교해서는 상대적으로 높은 지위에 위치한다는 생각을 갖는 것으로 드러났다. 계층이동성에 대한 평가에서는 종사상지위와 계급지위로서 분류된 자영자집단이 다소 상이한 결과를 보이고 있는데(자영자의 경우 유의치 않은 부적(－) 상관관계, 프티부르주아의 경우 유의한 정적(＋) 상관관계), 이는 비교기준 범주의 차이(종사상 지위의 모형에서는 상용직 노동자인 반면, 계급지위 모형의 경우 상용직-임시일용직을 포괄하는 하위직종의 노동자집단을 대표하는 프롤레타리아계급)에서 비롯되는 것으로 이해된다. 노조기능에 대한 평가태도에서는 자영자집단이 일관되게 노조 혐오의 강한 정서를 갖고 있는 것으로 확인되는 바, 서구의 선행연구에서 오랜 논쟁의 대상이 되어온 자영자의 노조태도와 관련해 우리나라의 자영자들은 전반적으로 확고한 개인주의적 사업자의식을 기반으로 하여 노조의 집합주의적 활동에 대한 반대정서가 매우 뿌리 깊다는 점을 유의할 필요 있다. 또한, 자영자집단의 이질성(상층-하층-특고 종사자)에 따른 계층의식 차이를 검증하는 경험적 분석을 수행한 결과, 상층 자영자집단들이 하층 자영자집단이나 특고 종사자에 비해 뚜렷하게 높은 사회경제적 지위에 속한다고 인식하는 경향을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한, 상층과 하층 자영자집단이 특고 종사자들에 비해 각각 계층상승이동과 반노조태도에 대해 유의하게 강한 의식성향을 보이는 것으로 드러났다.

Our study examines whether the self-employed, who are recently confronted with massive restructuring, is different from other worker and class groups, and whether there exists the heterogeneity of the self-employed workers, in terms of subjective status identification, social mobility assessment, and labor union assessment. The self-employed workers regard themselves as having the lower socio-economic status than employers and permanent workers do, while having the higher status than temporary workers. The self-employed workers’ assessment on social mobility is inconsistent, when compared with other labor market positions (insignificantly negative) and class positions(significantly positive), because the reference categories are different in two analytical models. The self-employed has consistently anti-union attitude, which is derived from their strong individualism and pro-laissez faire capitalism. In examining the heterogeneity of the self-employed workers, the upper group has the identification of higher social-economic status than the lower group and the dependent self-employed, while the upper and lower groups respectively have the stronger attitude toward social mobility and anti-unionism than the dependent self-employed.
