본 연구는 만화캐릭터에 빠져있는 선천성 소이증 장애를 지닌 초등학교 2학년(9세) 남아의 모래놀이치료 사례이다. 아동은 태어날 때부터 왼쪽 귀가 함몰되어 동작이 느리고, 만화캐릭터에 빠져 환상적이며, 자신감이 없고 친구관계에 어려움을 나타내었다. 모래놀이치료는 주 1회씩 총 23회기가 진행되었다. 치료과정은 3단계로 나누어 구분하였는데, 초기 단계인 1∼4회기의 모래상자는 혼돈의 내면 상태를 보이다가, 중기 단계인 5∼17회기에서 모험과 투쟁을 통하여 자신의 남성성(masculinity)을 찾아가는 과정을 나타내었으며, 말기 단계인 18∼23회기에 와서는 공동체 적응의 모습을 표현하며 자기(self)를 확립해나가는 모습을 나타내었다. 결과적으로 아동은 자신감이 생기고 또래와의 사회적 관계성이 향상되었으며, 만화캐릭터에 집착하던 모습에서 변화되어갔다. 본 연구는 만화캐릭터에 빠져있는 소이증 장애 아동이 모래놀이치료를 통하여 자신의 문제와 상처를 치유하고 자신의 고유성(individuality)을 이루어 가는 과정(journey)을 살펴봄으로써 장애아동을 위한 모래놀이의 치료적 의미를 제시하였다.

This study presents a case study of the application of sandplay therapy for a 9 year old boy, with microtia, who is obsessed with animation characters. The boy has a sunken left ear and shows slowness in physical movement. Due to his microtia, he exhibits a lack of self-confidence and has difficulties in relating with his peers. He also exhibits addiction to animation characters. Sandplay therapy sessions were conducted weekly, for a total of 23 sessions. The therapy sessions consist of three phases. In the initial phase of 1-4 sessions, the internal state of the client is chaotic. Throughout the middle phase of 5-17 sessions, the client begins a journey of self discovery; this involved an adventurous search for his masculinity and his Self. In the final phase of 18-23 sessions, the client shows a return to the community, which means that he has strengthened his ego. In summary, the study proposes a journey of individuality of a handicapped boy through sandplay therapy.
