본 논문은 최근 논란이 많은 상부지휘구조에 어떤 요인이 영향을 미치는지에 대한 논문이다. 상부지휘구조가 어떠한 방식으로 변화해야 하는지에 대한 논문은 수없이 많지만 무엇이 상부지휘구조에 영향을 미치는지에 대한 논문은 찾기가 쉽지 않다. 이 논문은 군의 상부지휘구조 결정요인을 사회/문화적 경직성, 정치적, 군사적, 경제적 관점에서 연구를 하였다. 연구결과 문화적 경직성이 높은 국가는 합동군제, 유연성이 높은 국가는 통합군제로 영향을 미친다는 결론을 얻었고, 정치적으로 문민통제를 강조하는 나라 또는 과거 군에 의해 헌정이 중단된 경험이 있는 국가의 경우 합동군제나 3군병립제에 영향을 주고, 공산권 국가는 통합군제에 영향을 미친다. 그리고 군사적 위협수준이 높고 전쟁수행 경험이 많은 나라는 통합군제에 영향을 미친다. 군종별 기능이 분화될수록 합동군제에 영향을 미치고 경제적 환경에 의해 상부지휘구조에는 영향을 미치지 않는다는 결론을 얻었다. 이 연구의 시사점은 최근국방개혁과 관련된 상부지휘구조는 사회/문화적, 정치적, 군사적인 관점을 모두 고려하여 결정되어야 한다는 점을 제공하고 있다.

This study designed to find out military command structure determinant. It is not easy to find which determent effect to the military command structure. We researched the prospect of social/culture tightness-looseness, political situation, military threat and economic situation. We found several propositions. First, countries with high cultural rigidity normally keep joint forces system. The opposite case, keep united command system. Second, countries to emphasize the civilian control or countries have been ruled by the military tend to have joint forces system. Communist countries have united command system. Third, the high level of military threat or many warfare experienced countries affect the united command system. Finally, the military command structure is not affected by the economic situation. This study provides an empirical proposition that military command structure related to social/culture, political, military threat.,
