원래 프로이트가 생각한 무의식의 개념은 비논리적 탈문법성을 특징으로 하는 제1차 사고과정(primary-process thinking)의 지배를 받는다. 그러나 제2지형학이론, 즉 구조이론에 올 때까지는 이미 그는 무의식에 상당한 정도의 합리성을 부여할 수밖에 없었다. 예컨대, 자아(ego)의 일부를 형성하는 무의식층은 합리적 언어, 즉 제2차 사고과정의 사유를 구사한다. 라깡이 ‘무의식이 언어와 같이 구조화되어 있다’라고 말할 수 있었던 것도 상징질서에 내재한 언어적 무의식을 보았기 때문이다. 그러나 실재계 시대를 맞아 라깡은 다시 합리적 언어로만으로는 설명할 수 없는 무의식의 개념에 닿는다. 실재계를 구성하는 무의식은 프로이트의 이드 개념에서와 같이 상당한 정도로 제1차 사고과정의 지배를 받고 있어 언어와 같이 구조화되어 있는 상징계적 무의식과는 구별된다.

The Freudian unconscious was originally concerned with the primary-process thinking characterized by ‘timelessness, exemption from contradiction, condensation and displacement.’ But by the time the second topography, or the structural theory sets in, Freud has to an appreciable degree applied a rational language, or the secondary-process thinking to the unconscious, as is manifested in the unconscious of the ego. The Lacanian dictum that the unconscious is structured like a language also reflects the secondary-process thinking inherent in the symbolic order. However, as the age of the real ushers in, Lacan finds himself in a ‘problematic’ situation regarding the concept of the unconscious. The unconscious concerned with the real, much like that of Freudian Id, involves significantly the primary-process thinking, which contrasts sharply with the symbolic unconscious structured like a rational language.
