Objective
The purpose of this study is to identify what effects lumbar extensor strength and pain scale, when applying exercise program which is used for low back pain patients generally to a disc patient, one of the various people with back pain.
Method
The subjects consist of 60, diagnosed with disc, randomly classifying control group(14 males, 16 females) and experiment group(14 males, 16 females); control group includes patients who were treated with electrotherapy which is a conservative physical therapy(H/P-15min., U/S-5min., TENS-15min) and experiment group is a group of participants who had lumbar intensified exercise for 3 times a week, 30 minutes , total 12 weeks, respectively.
Lumbar extensor strength is tested with Medex lumbar extension machine and a measure of pains with Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire.
Results are as follows
1. Lumbar extensor strength in experiment group shows significant differences in every angle. (when Zero degree p=0.000, 12°, 24° p=0.000, 36°, 48° p=0.000, 60° p=0.000, 72° p=0.010).
2. Lumbar extensor strength in control group shows significant differences in every angle. (when Zero degree p=0.004, 12°, 24° p=0.020, 36° p=0.034, 48° p=0.018, 60° p=0.019, 72° p=0.021).
3. Compared in control group between experiment group, an average gap of Lumbar extensor strength shows no significant differences.(p>0.05)
4. Both groups in Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire show significant differences:pre-test(20.53±5.37) and post-test (15.63±4.70)in experiment group, pre-test (24.43±9.58) and post- test(16.60±5.92) in control group. (p=0.000)
5. Compared in control group between experiment group, an average gap of Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire shows significant differences.(p=0.000)
Conclusion
This study shows Lumbar extensor strength and conservative physical therapy have effect on improving extensor and lessening pains. However, as only disc patients are subjected to it, there will be a little to go far that this study is applied to all back pain patients.
