번역물을 평가한다는 것은 번역물이 원작의 양식을 어떻게 반영하고 있는가를 찾아내는 작업이다. 텍스트가 전달하는 내용과 텍스트가 구성된 형식은 작가의 의도와 주제, 즉 양식을 표현하는 도구이다. 따라서 문학 번역의 평가에서 형식과 내용의 관련성에 관한 문제를 고려해야 한다. 만약 번역가가 작품의 양식을 제대로 번역하는데 실패한다면 TT(목표 텍스트)의 질은 완전하지 못할 것이다. 따라서 문학작품을 번역할 경우 ST(원천 텍스트)의 양식을 TT에 전달하는 방식이 번역물 품질에 중요한 영향을 미친다.

이 논문은 영국의 풍자 단편 소설인 뮤리엘 스파크(Muriel Spark)의 작품“You Should Have Seen the Mess”의 번역물인 「지저분한 꼴을 좀 보세요」를 ST의 양식이 번역물에 반영된 방식에 기준을 두고 분석, 평가했다. ST와 TT의 대조를 통해서 특징적인 부분을 찾아낸 다음 형식과 내용을 분류해서 분석했다. 이 과정에서 이 작품의 표현 도구인 풍자와 1인칭 화자에 의한 내용과 형식이 TT에 어떻게 반영되고 있는지 살펴보았다.

분석 결과에 의하면, 이 TT의 특징은 번역자의 자국화 전략과 번역물 독자의 가독성에 초점을 맞췄다는 것이다. 이는 이 TT가 원작에의 충실성에서는 이탈했음을 의미하지만 한편으로는 번역물 독자 친화적인 방식으로 TT의 대중화에 긍정적인 역할을 한 것으로 추정된다. 형식의 문제에서는 ST의 문장을 그대로 지키지 못했다. 따라서 ST의 저자가 전달하려는 정보 전달의 체계적 방식이 TT에는 그대로 전달되지 못했으며, 이는 ST의 양식을 표현하는데 장애가 되었다.

Translation assessment is the task where the assessor finds how a Target Text(TT) reflects the style of a Source Text(ST). Style is an essential component of literary translation act. Therefore it is natural to consider the issues concerning the relationship of form and content in literary translation assessment. If the translator fails to translate the style of the work appropriately, the quality of the product will be incomplete. So it affects greatly the text outcome whether the style of the ST is transferred to the TT properly or not. The content a ST conveys and the form it is structured are the tools the author uses to expresses the style of the work.

This paper will analyze and assess the translation of a short story, “You Should Have Seen the Mess” written by an English author, Muriel Spark. The analysis will be focused on the way how the style reflects on the TT. The comparative study will be performed in content and form separately. In addition, how the satire, which is the expressive method of the work, the content, and the form are reflected on the TT will be examined in the process.

The result of the analysis reveals that the translator takes the domestication strategy and focuses on the readability of TT readers. It means that the translation deviates from the faithfulness of the ST, however the strategy is positive in that the reader-friendly translation method contributes to popularization of translated works. In the translation of the form, the TT is not faithful to the ST and it fails to achieve the systematic conveyance of information. As the result, it makes the expression of the style difficult.
