소득불평등이 정치적 대표에 미치는 영향력에 관한 연구는 크게 세 가지로 정리할 수 있다: 1) 정치적 대표는 상위층의 정치적 선호에 더 반응, 2) 소득 수준과 관계없이 정치적 대표는 대중의 집합적인 선호에 반응, 3) 각 소득 계층의 정치적 선호와 정치적 대표의 무관계성. 그러나 경제적 불평등과 정치적 대표에 관한 경험적 연구들은 미국을 중심으로 서구 국가들의 사례에 집중한 나머지 한국을 비롯한 비서구 국가들에서 의원들의 입법행위가 소득별로 개인들의 정치적 선호에 어떻게 반응하는지 잘 모른다. 이에 본 연구는 18대 국회에서 쟁점의안에 대한 국회의원들의 의안투표 결과와 서베이 데이터를 활용해 확보한 소득 수준별 유권자들의 이슈들에 대한 선호를 측정한 데이터를 결합하여 한국에서 경제적 불평등과 정치적 대표의 관계를 경험적으로 분석하였다. 경험적 분석 결과 18대 국회의원들의 이슈에 대한 이념적 선호는 상위층의 정책선호와 일치하였지만, 국회의원들의 투표행태는 하위층의 정책선호에 더 반응하여 이루어졌다. 이러한 결과는 의원들의 재선 추구 목표와 한국의 약한 정당체계로 설명될 수 있다. 국회의원들은 재선에 유리한 고지를 차지하기 위해 유권자의 다수를 차지하는 하위층의 정치적 선호에 적극적으로 반응할 정치적 유인을 가지고 있었다. 또 정당과 유권자의 연계가 약한 상황에서 포괄적 지지 전략을 선택한 정당들이 탈이념화를 추구하면서 특정 계층을 대변하는 이념정당으로 나아갈 필요가 없었다.
