개정된 강화민감성이론에는 행동활성화체계(BAS), 행동억제체계(BIS), 투쟁/도피/동결체계(FFFS)가 포함되어 있다. 이 세 체계는 인간의 정동과 행동뿐 아니라 성격장애 같은 정신병리도 예측해줄 수 있다. 본 연구는 DSM에 포함되어 있는 세 개 군집, 10개의 성격장애 증상들이 BAS, BIS, FFFS라는 강화민감성의 세 차원들과의 어떤 관련성을 보이는지, 관련성이 성별에 따라 다른지를 확인하고자 하였다. 398명(남자 215명; 여자 183명)의 대학생들에게 처벌-보상 민감성 척도(SPSRQ, Torruba et al., 2001)와 성격장애진단질문지(PDQ-4+, Hyler et al., 1992)를 실시하였다. 상관관계분석, 상관관계의 차이검증, 그리고 단계적 회귀분석의 결과를 종합하여 결론을 내리면 다음과 같다. BAS는 군집 B(“극적인 행동과 불안정한 정서”가 특징)의 성격증상들과 연결되었고, BIS는 군집 C(“높은 수준의 불안”이 특징)의 성격증상들과 연관이 있었다. 군집 B 중 반사회성/연극성/자기애성 성격장애 증상은 높은 BAS와 관련이 있는 반면, 경계성은 높은 BIS와 관련이 있었다. 군집 C의 회피성/의존성/강박성 성격장애 증상 모두 높은 BIS와 관련이 있었다. 그러나 군집 A(“괴이한 행동”이 특징)의 경우, 성격장애 유형과 성별에서 혼합된 양상을 보여주었다. 편집성과 분열형의 남자는 높은 BIS와 연관된 반면, 여자는 높은 BAS와 관련이 있었다. 분열성 성격장애 증상은 남자든 여자든 낮은 FFFS와 연결되었다. 본 연구에서 의미 있는 발견은 FFFS가 분열성 성격장애 증상을 예측한다는 것이다. 본 연구의 의의는 성격장애 진단의 신뢰성을 증가시키기 위해 차원적으로 접근했다는 점과, 성격장애 연구에서 BAS와 BIS 차원뿐만 아니라 FFFS차원으로까지 확장한 국내 최초의 연구라는 점이다.
