본 연구는 한국개신교에서 나타나는 성서문자주의를 확인하고, 그것의 쟁점을 분석하며, 이를 넘어서기 위한 기독교교육 모형을 제시하려는 시도이다. 성서 본문에는 어떠한 실수나 오류도 없다는 성서무오성과 성서는 글자 그대로 하나님의 말씀으로 기록되었다는 성서문자주의는 한국개신교에서 널리 퍼져 있는 것으로 나타난다. 이러한 믿음의 이면에는 근대화 이후 신뢰를 잃어버린 교회와 성서의 위치를 회복시키려는 의도가 포함되어 있다. 성서문자주의는 이러한 의도를 성취하기 위해서 의심을 배척하고 확실성에 대한 믿음에 근거를 두는 이분법 및 성서의 권위를 주장하면서, 교회 내부의 결속력을 지키려는 권위주의로 이어질 수 있다. 그러나 이러한 성서문자주의와 권위주의는 현대 사회에서 유효하지 않은 것으로 여겨지므로, 본 연구에서는 성서문자주의를 넘어서기 위한 기독교교육에서의 성서 읽기 모형을 대안으로 제언하고자 한다.
