이 논문은 서울의 대표적 집창촌인 청량리 588 지역을 중심으로 도시 성매매 공간의 형성･유지･변화를 둘러싼 사회문화적･역사적･이데올로기적 배경을 살펴보고, 특히 내부 구성원들의 사회적 실천에 의해 매개되는 과정을 분석하였다. 구체적으로 ‘미스방’이라고 불리는 유리방 형태의 매춘 공간에 초점을 맞추어, 첫째 이 공간의 출현을 둘러싼 사회문화적･기술적･이데올로기적 배경을 탐색하고, 둘째 이를 둘러싼 내부자들의 이용 방식, 경험, 상징적 의미를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, ‘미스방’이라는 공간의 생산에 588 일대의 미시적 변화, 생활공동체로서 사회문화적 특성들, 후기 자본주의 사회에서 나타나는 소비 방식의 반영을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 588의 내부자들은 이렇게 생산된 공간을 수동적으로 수용하기보다, 호황의 상징, 경쟁과 상품화, 관광과 글로벌라이제이션의 공간으로 재구성･재해석하고 있었다. 이 논문은 집창촌에 대한 사회과학적 분석을 시도하여 사회사적 연구에 집중되어 왔던 국내 집창촌 연구의 한계를 보완하였다. 또한 로컬라이제이션, 관용의 지역으로서 공간성, 소비문화의 변화에 대해 논구하여 성매매 공간에 대한 기존의 사회과학적 논의를 확장시키고 있다.

This article examines the sociocultural, historical and ideological backgrounds surrounding the formation, maintenance and changes of ‘Cheongnyangni 588’, a representative red light district in Seoul, focusing especially on insiders' experiences. Adopting Low(1996)'s theoretical framework of the social production and social construction of urban space, it attempts the spatial and sociocultural analysis of the space called ‘missbang,’ a type of window brothel in Cheongnyangni 588. The sociospatial analysis shows that the social production of ‘missbang’ is closely related to the micro-level historical changes of Cheongnyangni 588, sociocultural characteristics such as communal culture, and consumerism in late capitalism. Furthermore, the analysis indicates that insiders, through social exchanges, memories and daily use of the of ‘missbang,’ reconstruct and reinterpret it as a space of prosperity, competition, commercialization and globalization.
