본 연구는 지역 사회를 섬기는 ‘사회적 선교’와 지역 내 다른 교회들 간의 ‘경쟁과 생존’관점에서, 우리나라 소형 교회의 지역적 분포 특성을 규명하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 서울 시 423개 행정동의 공간적 이질성을 반영한 지리 가중 회귀모형을 적용하였다. 분석결과, ‘생존과 번영’측면에서 인구 밀도가 높은 곳에 소형교회가 밀집해있는 전역적인 경향성을 발견하였으며, 국지적으로는 중·대형 교회수가 적은 곳, 주거 용도 지역 비율이 높지만 아파트 비율은 낮은 곳, 사업체 밀도가 높은 곳에 소형교회 밀도가 높은 것을 확인하였다. 사회 선교적 측면에서, 노인층 인구 비율이 높은 곳에 소형교회가 밀집하여 분포하고 있지만, 외국인이 많이 거주하는 경우 오히려 그 반대현상을 국지적으로 관찰 할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 교회의 분포를 설명하는 여러 사회 환경 변수들을 통해 소형 교회의 ‘생존’에 유리한 공간적 특이성을 찾았으며, 사회적 약자와 지역 사회를 섬기는 교회의 사회선교 실천의 이행 가능성을 지리적으로 조명하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

In this study, we examine spatial patterns of small churches in Korea from the view of both ‘social mission of church’ which serves the community and ‘survival and prosperity’ which looks at competition among churches within a region. We applied a geographically weighted regression (GWR) to consider spatial heterogeneity of 423 administrative districts. As a result, in terms of survival, we observed global tendency that small churches are concentrated where the region is densely populated. In some regions, small churches tend to be located in the region with the fewer big churches, the higher residential area density, the lower proportion of apartment and the higher business density. On the other hand, in view of social mission, we locally identified that density of small churches is high in the district where many elders over 65 years reside, while it showed the opposite aspect for foreigners. This research has novelty in that we identified the spatial specificity of small churches in terms of survival through socio-environmental variables, and shed lights on the possibility of the implementation of social mission of the church to the socially vulnerable and community based on geographical distribution.
