이 연구는 유아의 가정환경자극, 언어·인지 발달 및 사회적 유능감 간의 종단적 관계를 검증하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 육아정책연구소에서 실시한 한국아동패널의 5차, 6차, 7차년도 자료의 유아 총 951명을 선택하였다. 기술통계, 신뢰도 및 상관관계를 분석하였으며, 최종적으로 구조방정식모형분석을 실시하였다. 이 연구의 주요 결과를 요약하고 논의하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 아버지와 어머니의 교육수준이 유아의 가정환경자극에 미치는 영향을 통제 한 후, 만 4세 유아의 가정환경자극이 만 5세 유아의 언어·인지 발달에 미치는 영향은 통계적으로 유의했다. 둘째, 만 5세의 유아의 언어·인지 발달은 만 6세 유아의 사회적 유능감에 유의한 영향을 미쳤다. 셋째, 만 5세 유아의 언어·인지 발달은 만 4세 유아의 가정환경자극과 만 6세 유아의 사회적 유능감 간의 관계에서 유의미한 간접적인 영향을 미쳤다. 이와 같은 결과는 유아의 가정환경자극이 사회적 유능감에 미치는 영향에서 유아의 적절한 인지·언어 발달이 중요한 역할을 함을 시사 한 결과로, 관련 논의와 후속 연구에 대한 제언을 제시하였다.
