본 논문은 한국추상미술 1세대 작가 김환기와 그를 추모하는 환기미술관의 형성과정을 통해 ‘한국적 코스모폴리타니즘’의 구현을 살펴본다. 일본 유학시절 근대 서구미술을 수용한 후 파리, 뉴욕으로 이주하며 한국적 미학을 반영한 추상을 추구했던 김환기를 한국적 모더니즘과 초국가적 예술의 보편성을 구축한 사례라고 보고 그의 예술의 변화를 분석하며 민족주의와 코스모폴리타니즘의 불안한 결합과정을 고찰한다. 또한 김환기가 1974년 거주하던 뉴욕주의 한 공공묘지에 묻혔으나 정작 그의 미술세계를 보여주는 환기미술관은 서울 부암동에 문을 열게 된 사실에 주목하여 이 미술관 설립을 추동한 철학과 동력을 살펴본다. 한국최초의 1인 작가 미술관인 환기미술관은 김환기/김향안 부부 주변의 인물들이 공유했던 코스모폴리타니즘의 구현체로서 그의 초국가적 삶의 행적과 예술관을 보여주는 동시에 그러한 가치를 확산하는 공간임을 밝힌다. 그 결과 김환기의 예술과 환기미술관을 구축한 ‘한국적 코스모폴리타니즘’은 20세기 한국 미술사의 외연을 확대하고 세계미술사와의 공감대 형성에 기여할 수 있는 틀이라는 점을 제시한다.

This paper examines ‘vernacular cosmopolitanism’ or ‘Korean cosmopolitanism’ in Kim Whanki's life and career and in the formation of Whanki Museum. Kim Whanki epitomizes a model of Korean abstract artists who was exposed to European modernism in pre-war Japan but constructed his artistic identity under the influence of Korean aesthetics. His art progressed from the images of lyrical objects such as moon, trees, and traditional ceramics to dot-based monochrome abstract paintings while he moved from Seoul to Paris and finally to New York. Despite his death in New York in 1974, his commemorative museum opened in Seoul in 1992 by the efforts of Whanki's wife and soul-mate, Kim Hyang-An. The museum functions not only as the perpetual site of Whanki's legacy as a nationalist cosmopolitan who navigated the lone journey of negotiating nationalism and cosmopolitanism but also as the site of demonstrating Korean modernism based on the transcultural, cosmopolitan values in art.
